Multicade Help

Just my .02. Get a working power supply!

This is the first thing you must have in almost anything, car, plane, boat, train, computer and arcade game.

I have bought a few from this guy and they work great. Some of the parts were bent up but worked great.

I used a computer power supply before I bought these and worked some but you can not adjust the +5 volt supply. The computer supply voltages were a bit low and board would not always work.

Just get a decent power supply and then you will have a good base for testing. Without a good supply voltage you are doing yourself an injustice.

Yes, the 9volt came in right at 9 so the meter should be fine. I guess I will email the ebay seller and she what she says. Was curious on it as the adjustable +5 was bent, which didnt seem right. Guess I will try another purchase and hopefully get a refund on this one. Thanks again for the help.

Last Question hopefully on this today. I noticed a switch on the bottom of supply which could be turned to 220V which is what is what at or 110V. I tried very quickly the 110V, the power light seemed to turn on, which it hadnt before, but a little smoke then came out of power supply, which I then turned it off very quickly before even trying to use multimeter.

Any thoughts on this?

The ones I have bought were bent also and that is no big deal. They do that many times so once it is adjusted it can not be changed by accident or bumping into something. Too high of a voltage on the +5 can fry the chips on the boards so it is kind of a safety thing.

Just a reminder, check the power supply from ground and +5 or +`12. Meter should be at 20 volt dc min. Leads should be at common and voltage. Don't adjust meter settings with leads attached to anything.

Should have turned supply voltage off first and unplugged from source (wall).

But which setting should it have been at, the 220V or 110v?

And if 110, if I do the switch with everything disconnected and then connect wires, plug in and power in, there shouldnt be any smoke?

If you're in the USA, it should have been set at 110. You say it was set at 220? Where did you buy the power supply from? Overseas?

Smoke's not a good thing, but at this point, you're past the point of no return, so unplug it, make sure it's on 110, and plug it in again (NOT CONNECTED to your game board, of course).

Try seeing if you get voltage now.

Ok, so unplugged it all, turned power supply to the 110v. Got everything connected and plugged in and powered on. Sounded like it was running fine, was going to check the meter, when i again saw a little smoke. So I turned it off real quick.

a loud snap/pop came from the power supply, followed by a decent amount of smoke and I believe it is completely shot now (power supply that is). Should that really have happened when switched the 110volt?

With power on to supply===YEAH
With no power on to supply=NOPE

power was on to supply as I was going to test the +5 and +12. So I shouldnt have turned the power on? Now I am really confused.

The original time I did have power on when I switched it, a little smoke came out and then I unplugged everything quickly.

I then waited about 10-15 minutes. switched t0 110 with it not being hooked up to anything. Tried again and that is when snap and smoke came. I assume it was just finishing the process of blowing out the power supply?

So, I guess I will need to buy another power supply and make sure it is set at 110 before doing anything.

so basically I need to ensure to always have everything off and unplugged when tinkering with the power supply (once I get another one now)? When do the +5 adjustments, can the unit be on for that, or do I turn the game off, adjust and then turn it back on? Just want to make sure I do it all correctly next time. thanks,

The supply should be set to 110v before you do any adjustments or put power to the thing. I usually plug in the ac wires to the supply and adjust for +5.15 volts and while I am at it measure the +12. Since this is probably a switching supply, you should not have to worry about loading the supply. After you connect the other wires to the power supply, check your voltages again and adjust as needed.

Again don't adjust the 110/220v volt switch on computer or power supply while powered up. The +5 volt needs to be tested when powered up.

A tech once flipped the 220/110 volt switch on my computer (while power was off) and took me about 5 mins. to figure out. I turned the power off and put the switch back to 110 and powered back up. It worked fine after that.

These supplies all came with the 110/220 switch set to 110 but you need to check to B sure. These are cheep enough with free shipping, bent up a slight bit but work great.

Great and thanks. Unfortunately, I just purchased the power supply, but then noticed the shipping time. God I hope it doesnt take 3-4 weeks to get this. I know it is free shipping, but cmon. Some of the feedback does say fast shipment, so hopefully that is the case. Thanks for feedback. For sure going to set this one up right.

So just got a new power supply and everything is back to working condition. REadings are coming out perfect and game works back to normal. Thanks for the help everyone, really appreciate it and save some money on trying to have someone brought in to fix it.
