I'll start this thread with what little research I've done, and my thoughts:

  • 49-way only needed for Blaster
  • 8-way needed for Splat, Bubbles and Robotron
  • Microswitch-based joys suck
  • Leaf-based 8-way joys are VHTF
The Happ "Perfect 360" seems like a good solution, with a ball-top handle (not sure what length). What are others thinking?

Will an 8-way prevent me from playing Blaster? Will I care?

find a wico 8 way leaf switch joystick. i have two that i'm using for my MW build.

here are two.

all you need then is to find a red ball stick part to replace the purple one with. like this one.

as far as your other question regarding blaster, i don't know how the 8 way will affect it. i know sinistar works with an 8 way on the jrok board.

I would also go with the 8-way leaf joysticks. They are not too hard to find in parts. I often look at joystick part lots and you can find the bases around. Then you just need the sticks. If you have a hard time locating those, hit me up. I have several. They aren't all in great shape, but will work just fine.

Also the 8-way should work fine with Blaster, or at least it works well for me. I have never used a 49-way so hard to say how much worse an 8-way is, but I play Blaster routinely with the 8-way (micro on that one) and it is fun. I have a MW in a Joust cab (with the clay kit) using the 8-ways (leafs) and it is fantastic. I also have a MW with the 19-1 and that one has 8 way micros. They both work well, but the feel of the leafs is far superior IMHO.

I've played Blaster in an original duramold with the 49-way stick, plus can swap between 49-way and 8-way for the game in my setup. It might be me... but I don't really see any reason for the subtly of control that a 49-way can add. Sinistar, absolutely a 49-way works great there, but Blaster.. hmm.. don't see it helping.

What I used was two Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT Ball Handle Joysticks (4 or 8-way)

They work great because i too hate the leaf sticks.

Good luck.

I have a couple of those that I swapped the spring out for a stronger one. The centering was a little weak, IMO. The new spring tightens the joystick up a lot and really improves the feedback.

I put Happ Perfect 360's in my game. I tried to put Wico ball top shafts in the sticks but they wouldnt fit so they still ahve the Happ bats.

I was able to score over 2 million points on Robotron on skill level 10 AFTER I put the perfect 360's in. Before that I couldnt quite make a million with the Happ microswitch Ultimates that I had in there before.

I'm sold on Perfect 360's.

I'd go with the Wico 8way ball top ones. They are gonna feel nice and smooth. I dont like the clicking of modern
joysticks.

A little offtopic but related..

Jrok, any update on the MW boards for xmas?
