Multi Taito Questions

Well, I've been using a program to try to crack the password on the taito 20 game .zip file... it's been running 16 hours now and has tried 16.8 billion (as in with a B) different password combination's thus far...and it's only up to 7-digit passwords. This can take a long time it seems.

Awesome! I was going to try one of those but wasn't real sure about it. Let me know if it finds anything, I'm really curious to see if those crackers work.

This is gunna take a LOOOOONNNNNG time if the password is a long one. 20+ hours later and we're still on 7 digits...

I can tell you the password is more than 15 digits.... I ran a program for several weeks before giving up. And that's not just with a dumb brute-force method, as I already know what the decryption keys are. So I can unpack the archive, but without the password I can't encrypt my modified files. The game will not work unless all the files in the archive are encrypted with the password. All of the HanaHo ZIP files (Taito 10-game, Taito 20-game, and SNK) use the same password.

Damn!

I guess they were pretty serious about securing these cards!

It's not like it has to be a password they can memorize (I doubt they are typing it in manually), so it is easy and makes sense for them to choose a long random string of characters that they know can not be easily cracked.

Although the password has not been cracked yet, the archive has been cracked by using a Known Plain Text Attack (that's how the decryption keys were found). With the decryption keys known it is easier to find the password (so the impossible may become possible). There is professional software out there that is much more intelligent than the stuff I was using... so there is still hope.
But I think the most practical approach at this point is to dump the boot code from the HanaHo board.... It has to contain the password in some form.

Alright... I got the board inside the EA cab... it's working great... I used the "lock switch" I used prior for credits as the MENU button... but one question:

How in the heck do I get in to the service menus to adjust things like number of men for each game... difficulty for each game... etc. How do I adjust sound volume?

I don't have the SERVICE or TEST buttons hooked up, but I did ground out the wires to test the to see if they drop to a service menu and they don't appear to... unless they're supposed to be on a switch where they have to be gounded out at power up to drop in to service mode... is that the case?

I also read somewhere about changing volume uses 2 player joystick? Is that the only way? I don't have a 2nd player stick attached.

There is no way to adjust game DIPs that I know of. And yes, you do need the 2P stick to adjust volume (when on the game menu).

Well... I suppose I have to take the good with the bad. Some things I've noticed playing with the machine (I currently on have the 10 game going)...

(A) Qix has audio issue... it's annoying.
(B) Zoo Keeper really bogs the board down... now I've not played a dedicated Zoo Keeper in years, but I don't remember it ever slowing down so much.
(C) Elevator Action's audio is maybe 9/10... I can tell a difference with the gunshot mostly.
(D) The lack of a service mode stinks.

All in all I'd give the unit an 8/10. The games appear to be decently emulated. It's very easy to get going. It does what it's supposed to for the most part... I'll just have to get over the nagging little issues listed above.

...

I think zookeeper plays the same, the big issue with zookeeper are the sounds.

the game sounds are way louder than the background sounds.

Does Zookeeper really slow down on yours? Like level 5 or 6 it gets about 1/2 speed on mine (especially when holding the trowel)...

Do you have both your speakers hooked up? I noticed the sound was much better overall with both speakers hooked up.

I have a dedicated Zoo Keeper. Sounds normal to me. The game can definitely slow down that much on later levels, especially with the net in hand.

Bumping this thread since a few members will be getting boards this month.

BTW, Can someone share the 10 game and SNK image files please?

I'd be interested in the SNK file too. I have the 10 and 20 Taito...just have to figure on how to email or FTP it...
