I'm tired of replacing my sons DS games when he loses them. I was thinking of buying a multi-cart that I can load his games on. I figure it's cheaper to replace the multi-cart if he loses it than dishing out $20-$40 on the individual game.

Is the R4 card the way to go here or is there another option that is better? He is 6 so I need a simple menu system for him to select the games.

Thanks,
Leo

I have an extra new iTouchDS if you're interested. Yeah, these are great for kids. I started with an iTouchDS card for my daughter when she was 3 and couldn't read because it has a simple icon selection interface. Now she's 5 and can read, so she's using an R4 running Wood firmware. Works great, and plays everything! Absolutely the way to go with a kid.

(edited....I thought my extra card was an R4, but it was an iTouchDS)

Yup. R4 is good. It was nice for the kids on car trips so they didn't have to switch out carts and I didn't have to worry about them (or me) losing them. Unfortunately, my DS met an untimely death and my R4 is collecting dust until I can find a cheap enough used DS.

Edit: Forgot to add that my wife and I hardly played the same games so it was convenient for us to not have to switch out carts every time one or the other of us used the DS.

Someone here recently asked what they were worth and was looking to get rid of one.

Probably a stupid question, but does the card come with the software (Menu sys / game cart copy) or do you have to find and download?

If download, what is the best options / cost wise?

He has about 16 games I want to put on one cart.

I haven't looked in a while, but when I got my R4, I think there was a web site listed where I downloaded the software. The software was completely free. It was just a drag and drop onto the microSD card. You could get a cheap 4gig card and have plenty of room for those games, mp3s, etc.

does the r4 cart also handle gba games? Its a pain in the ass since I have a few and no carrying case for them unlike my ds games

No, none of the slot 1 cards do. You can get a slot 2 (GBA card) to do that, but I've never tried one.

I have had one since my original GBA. The GBA flash carts were great for NES and SNES emulators, from what I recall, and I did keep some of my GBA games on it. Mine also came with a dock to rip your own GBA games as well as your saves.

The M3 is a flash cart for GBA games on your NDS. It uses CF cards to hold the roms. There was also an SD version.

For GBA games, I use one of these myself http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/3_in_1_Expansion_Pack_for_EZ-Flash_V

You put your GBA roms on your slot 1 (R4, M3, etc) microSD card, along with something like "GBA ExpLoader" which you can then run from the R4 moonshell/wood interface (like an DS rom), and it loads the interface that allows you to load GBA roms to the slot 2.

The EZ-flash has 2 types of memory, NOR flash and PSRAM. With PSRAM, GBA roms are loaded on the fly, save data is stored on the slot 1. Loading a game to the NOR flash memory allows the EZ-flash behave like a real GBA cart.

The EZ-flash doubles up as a rumble pack and extra RAM if you want to use a browser.

I have no idea how this device compares to standalone slot 2 solutions, as I've never used one.
