I emailed CPR asking about where the Comet playfield might end up if it were to get into their manufacturing/production timeline, here was Kevin Wayte's response:

"Unfortunately we're booked until 2017 with 32 titles grandfathered in. We've put a moratorium on playfield artwork with our art team. No more new titles can be started on the drawing board. I understand your plea, but we took on too much committment as it is. Sorry."

Seems like a good guy, but the news is still teh suck, unless a person wanted to gear up and start their own playfield repro shop. Booked until 2017...sounds like there's room in that market!

that's pretty cool he let you know though. Good news for us though. So that's just over 4 ppl a year who are going to be happy a playfield for their game will be done.

I'm still on the fence over ordering a new PF for my FG. Mine's got a bad case of paint peeling in a couple spots, but it's hard to justify $600 on a pin for a new shiny version of what already works.

However, it's great to see companies like CPR making new stock.

I wish they were doing newer games (1990 and After). Older games are not my thing.

They put out a super quality product, I will admit. I love pinball, but will never drop 500+ on a piece of wood w/ ink on it. :)

There are times it makes sense though, I have a Space Shuttle that works 100% but the playfield is shot.
I paid $0 for it, so $600 for a minty SS is a bargain for me! :)

Well, if your machine is a favorite of yours and you don't really ever plan on selling it, then putting in a new playfield is a great idea. In a home environment, you will have a great looking playfield that will last for the life of the machine. Generally putting a new playfield won't pay off if you're looking to sell the machine, but it's great otherwise.

Be careful with this line of thinking :)

If you really want "minty" you're going to need a lot more than just the playfield.

Yeah, that was a poor choice of words, I regretted it right after posting :)

I DO plan on re-stenciling the cabinet and replacing plastics, etc.. but you're right, a new playfield doesn't make a perfect pin.
