Hello, I recently purchased an original ms pacman cocktail unit. When I picked the game up all was working fine. The gentleman who I purchased the unit from was showing me some of the inards of the game. He accidentally hit the door while it was open and the screen went nearly blank. He said that happens because of a tilt switch on the door. I brought the unit home and played a few games, everything went great. I cleaned up the game a bit, having to tilt the unit slightly to clean underneath.

Now, the black screen with a 1 inch blue horizontal line on top and bottom are back. I got ahold of the seller and he said the round magnet tilt switch must be setting right in order for the game to work. Does anyone know what the heck is going on here? I hope it's a simple issue. Thanks!

There is not a tilt switch in a pacman. There is a slam switch on the inside of the coin door. Check that and make sure the contacts are open. I doubt this is your problem.

The user manual says the game has a tilt switch. Is the small magnet supposed to be in a certain position in order to work properly?

Switch

There is a slam switch that is retained on the coin door by the lock it's self. It hangs down from there.
I agree. I doubt thats your problem in this case.

There is a weighted leaf switch assembly on the coin door on most Midway games. It is attached to a bracket that is held in place by the coin door lock.

This switch is normally open. When you beat on the coin door, the weighted moving blade momentarily contacts the fixed rear blade signalling a "tilt" or reset to the game board. It is there to prevent getting free credits by pounding on the door.

Midway originally called this switch an "anti-cheat switch", but it is also known by these names:

tilt switch

slam switch

slap switch

abuse switch

anti-slam switch

Most of us technicians today refer to it simply as a tilt switch.

Not really getting the blue hoizontal line across the top and bottom screen anymore. When I start the machine the screen remains solid black. No sound, but the lights work and I can hear the fans in the machine running. Could the monitor have lost connection? Strange how one second it works then after moving it gently I get nothing.

Gameboard edge connector may be loose/dirty. Cabinet fuses/fuseholders may be bad.

Gameboard itself may have a problem.

Like Ken said, its not a magnet its just a weight. Its there for kids who decide to hit and shake the machine. Most people bend the switch leafs so there is no chance of them making contact. That switch wont cause the issues you are having but it will cause resets.
