Surprise, surprise!
I'm going to start a resto!

Once I get a Ms. Pac, the work will begin. I already have a new bezel, CPO, marquee, black gloss paint or someone to powdercoat, and a Ms. Pac-Man Plus kit, and soon a set of stencils and coin door plate.
Soon I will get a Phoenix oe TwoBits repro CPO, undecided still. Yes, I know about Twobits, some things they have are alright, some bad. Their cocktail CPOs are bad, but their redesign of the original are pretty faithful except for the Player 1 Ms. Pac, red being more orange (but that would match my bezel), a line thickness, and of course the copyright. My main complaint about the Phoenix repro is the orange. If they fix this in a future run and the P1 Ms. Pac (especially if they use the original screens), I will go that way instead.

I do have a few questions;
How much paint thinner will I need to spray it?
Can you roll paint with a stencil on?
How many coats will I need per color?
Would a multi-purpose sprayer work well?

Thanks everybody. I'm looking forward to this.

Ah, so now that I will be doing a resto, no one replies except for anonymous tags. I get it. ;)

I'm just going to say it so that you can learn from this.

So do you have a cab yet? People are already a bit turned off by your non stop chatter. People have since gotten forgiving once they got wind that you are (in most of our eyes) a child.

Your scaled MAME build is already 11+ pages of pretty much only design progress when you are mostly asking for advise and then ignoring the best advise. It's also a project that belongs more on BYOAC's site. Oddly you now want to start a restoration?

If you are going to spray a cab, I seriously suggest you should get parental supervision both on the project and on this site with you.

Restoration... ok fine. Stencil project... ok fine. If you expect feedback then what do you expect feedback on? No one will likely comment unless you show some progress or have something to talk about... Answers to your paint questions are pointless w/out a context on what tools you'll be using for application and what types of paint you'll be using.

There are threads hear about air tools and painting cabs. There are also threads about using rollers to paint cabs as well. Most of your questions would be answered with good search and research...

Hopefully you have something worthy of restoration like this.

Most of the answers to your questions are here in various threads already...take a look at my ms pac resto thread linked in my sig. I go into the type of paint I used, how I thinned it, what I used to spray it and how many coats, at least for the base blue.

As for thinning to spray, what are you spraying with? HVLP gun connected to a compressor? Are you spraying latex? Oil?

Yes, you can roll with a stencil on. There are many threads in the resto forums where people have done this.

Nobody can tell you how many coats you will need...it's going to depend on the type of paint, and how good a job you do applying it, and how you apply it (spray vs roll).

Do you have a link to the multi-purpose sprayer?

I'll be using the Glidden Latex paint matches on Apollo.com. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
My Ms. Pac will either be the one I posted if I should get or one from the guy that was in my other thread "The Decision." For $150-$200 I don't expect much. It's obviously not going to be a beautiful mint Ms. Pac with one nick on it. ;)

I will go with rolling for this one.

Another question is; When I sand inbetween coats what grit(s) will I need?
Ckaesk, I have seen your Ms. Pac resto and you did a fabulous job on it. I needed to know how many coats I would need for the stencil, but since I can roll I will go that way.

For this, I will listen to every bit of advise I recive and be very grateful for it. For the other thread, we just don't have a router/need one, I decided not to use Artworkdoctor, and I didn't even ask for it in the first place.

So this is a thread about a restoration of a game you don't own?

It's like how you posted in Phet's Before/After thread on a future restore when you have not even seen the cab you want to restore. How can this be....

I commend your enthusiasm but seriously you need some adult supervision. You are talking about some expensive tools in some of these cases as well as posible dangerous tools. I wouldn't let my kids mix bondo or spray paint stuff. I wouldn't want a 10 year old kid applying $150 worth of stencils also.

For a 10~ year old you have picked a cab that is not "easy" to restore. I suggest just doing a patch and paint in blue FIRST before you get ahead of yourself. A nice patched and painted blue Ms Pac-man is the a few big steps into a large restoration job. Doing stencils is a long way into it.

again I recommend adult supervision

Some you you guys, please don't be so downputting. Fine, I may as well just leave this hobby/passion/obsession and let another Pac-Man be thrown away.

My father has fully agreed to this project. Trust me guys, I'm not the average Joey off the street. I am careful and know what I'm doing.

I will hopefully finally see my cab choices tomorrow.

Here's my plan:
Dismantle cab, remove t-moulding and tarp up interior
sand off paint
bondo up cabinet
sand
roll 3 coats of primer
sand
roll on blue
sand
apply and paint yellow stencil, remove while paint is still tacky
once dry, weed out extras
repeat last 2 steps for other stencils
reassemble cabinet
enjoy!

Inbetween paint:
remove old CPO with putty knife and Goof Off
use wire wheel to remove paint from powdercoated parts
repaint black powdercoated parts
apply new CPO dry
refinish marquee

I believe that's all...

If you truly get to select from multiple Pac cabs then make sure you get a plywood one and not a particle board one. The plywood ones are way easier to deal with.

Also, does your father realize that this could easily be a $1000 project? You would probably be way better off getting almost any working Jamma conversion game off craigslist and doing the whole new paint, new t-molding, repaint the coin door, etc, as your first project rather than trying to do a full restore on a dead pac shell.

Joey, take your time, google first, search the boards next, and think before you ask. I've answered my own questions myself on this board, so don't feel bad about asking, but work on your search skills. Real talk.

It's going to be a complete (for the most part) cabinet in working order, minus the marquee and bezel, and likely daughtercard.
He is aware of the price, we are just going a different route, getting parts here and there spread out over time and using similar things across different projects.

May I ask, how will I be able to tell the difference between a plywood and particle board cab?

Your dad will be able to tell the difference by looking inside.. Most of them are plywood, but some Ms Pacs and a lot of Galagas are particle IIRC.

Good luck. Hope it works out.

Since you will be getting it from Geoff, let your dad do most of the talking.

Most likely the cab will be soaked with cat piss as the other cabs are in this warehouse. Just that fact alone turned me off from visiting this warehouse. Most of your strip down and restore will be in dealing with the smell of cat piss.

You will have to also unbury any pac cab you will want to look at. Your father hopefully is a big guy. Unless you have lots of help, he will be in for a whole day of moving arcades around. They are all packed in so tight that you must walk on the tops of them to lookat the ones in the back. I would not take my kids on a raid like this. This warehouse is not neatly arranged etc... there's lots of stuff and some gems but get ready for the work and the cats.

No joke... hopefully your dad does not get pissed at you and knows what to expect.

All the real deal is, I pick a game, and have either a member here or we pick it up.
He literally tetrised out the Pac-Mans so I can see and try them. He completely rearranged the warehouse recently.
My dad knows what to expect, it's the machine that speaks to me that goes home. ;)

Did you post pics of this project somewhere on the site?

Pics?

Learn what to look for in a monitor and find a low burnin G07 for it. Geoff may be able to swap you out one from a pac-man if the ms pac doesn't have it. If there is burn then Pac maze burn is acceptable.

I would first get the Pac cab 100% working before you do any restoration. Monitor work is very dangerous but G07s are pretty simple with a low cap number and all the repair parts are available via bob. I would then go for a Souza 4:1 pac upgrade. Do the HS/Ram udpade if you can afford it.

Buy it
Take pics
Clean it up 100%
Then post and declare the project
Repair and upgrade it as needed
Then do a restore in stages.
Update w/ pics as you go...

Doing it and showing progress will earn you way more cred than just talking about something that has not happened.
