Hi,

Are ms. pac-man cocktail table monitor available? I see TWOBITS sells a WG19" for $399 with shipping (damn that's a lot!), but are there any other options?

thanks,
grimholtz

Any standard arcade monitor will work. You don't mention where you are, but I'm sure if you post a WTB you can find a nearby KLOVer with a spare monitor.

But, usually, it's much easier to just fix the monitor that's already in there. What's wrong with it, or is it just completely missing?

Just near Boston, Massachusetts.

What does WTB mean?

Not missing. Used it for a few months then it went flaky. There's a thread about it here (with screenshots): http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?p=1415797 I just think I'd screw up installing what they sent back. I already removed the two boards, but I don't know if i need to send the "yolk" or anything else. I only just learned what a yolk is yesterday.

thanks,

Your best beat is to just recap the chassis board. I was looking for a new monitor for my ms pac, they are impossible to find now and if you do the price is high for a new one. Any used monitior will have the same problem. If you buy a different monitior there will be wiring issues, if you don't want to recap it...your for sure don't want to figure out how to wire in a new monitor. I don't see any screen burn at all. You can adjust it to get a good picture but it will just continue to do this, your verticle hold is out...the simplist least expensive option is to recap...its very simple..start one cap at a time, make sure positive and negitive leads are in the correct location..drip of solder...snip the lead and on to the next one. You would also want to recap your pcb for the game, if you experience problems with volume...you need new caps...these machines are very very simple to work on.

There is about 20 caps in the kit for your monitor. But truly, it's not that hard. I'd be happy to walk you through it. Since your monitor powers on and appears to just not sync properly, your first option is to replace all the capacitors that commonly fail. A capacitor kit is only going to cost you about $12, but if you're going to dig in (and I highly recommend you do, this is one of the easiest monitors to repair) I would suggest getting this:

This deluxe repair kit from Bob Roberts will contain everything you should need to get your monitor looking beautiful again. Start with the baggie of caps first. If your monitor's not up to snuff after caps, then at least you have the rest of the parts you need to keep going.

Lots of the 'professional' repair companies out there will charge you upwards of $100 or more to repair a monitor. This kit will cost you about $45 shipped, and includes WAY more parts than you will get replaced if you send it off somewhere.

It's really not that hard to recap a monitor, or replace a flyback transformer if you need to. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but after doing about a dozen this fall, I feel much better about it now, and can tell you that it's very rewarding to know that you fixed it yourself. Plus, getting comfortable fixing monitors is just part of the experience of owning machines like this. We all become TV repairmen. (see my sig :) )

Go to the parts page:

http://www.therealbobroberts.net/parts.html

It's the 3rd item on the list: the G07 Super Repair Kit.

If you've never ordered from Bob Roberts before, you'll need to mail him a check or money order. Then he'll mail your parts. A bit 'traditional' some would say, but don't sweat it. And plus, once you've successfully completed a transaction with Bob, you'll be put on the cross-ship list, which means on your subsequent orders, he'll ship them out as soon as you tell him that you've mailed payment. Very slick deal.

Done!
What's the G07 Deluxe Repair Kit? I can't see the difference between it and the Super Repair Kit.

The Deluxe kit includes the voltage regulator, and the Super kit doesn't. Now that I think of it, it might not be a bad idea to get the Deluxe kit if you can spring the extra $4.
