I thought I'd share this for those looking for more things to try to completely eliminate the hum bar, since it worked for me.
Ever since I restored my Ms. Pac (back in 2008), it's been doing great. I've never had any real issues with it, but there's always been a VERY tiny residual form of the hum bar. It's so minor that you really have to be looking to see it, but if you do, you'll notice the ever so slight faded black bar (about the thickness of a needle) scrolling right to left. There's also been some extra hum noise, not much, but it's definitely there.
This is after I did all of the recommended fixes back in 2008. I had replaced the fuse block, replaced the fuses, cleaned the PCB edge connector and replaced the edge connector on the wiring harness. It's never completely gone away, but it's never bothered me enough to dig into it any more...until now.
My fiance and I are having a house-warming party and I wanted to get this thing to perfection. Since I just recently moved it, I figured it was a good time. I was also planning on replacing the speaker, since the bass had blown (you can hear some distortion when Ms. Pac loses a life.)
So, first thing I did after I moved the Ms. Pac into the new place, was readjust the monitor to my liking - (the bumpy, hour long drive had messed a little with the monitor settings.) I got the G07 dialed into where I like it and then moved on.
Next, I checked all the fuses on my multimeter to confirm that they were good. Then I cleaned them with a scotch brite. I also went over the PCB edges with an eraser and confirmed that the edge connector was in good shape.
No change. There was still that ever so tiny faded black bar scanning right to left.
Then I read somewhere on here about ground issues. I never specifically read anything about ground wiring affecting the hum bar, but I did recall that the power plug ground prong was broken off when I got the game. So I replaced the power plug and guess what...IT FIXED THE HUM BAR. I replaced the speaker and now I get no bar and no hum!
I was surprised to see that the ground prong was the source of the problem. So, there you have it!
