Moving to Australia....question about taking a game with me

Maybe some of you have noticed I have been "liquidating" quite a few things lately......
Reality is my wife and I are moving to Australia for about 2-3 years (job related). Since we will be selling our house I took the opportunity to sell about half my games and most of the spare parts.

This is a break from my physical games but not a break from lurking around here!

I will be storing about 12 games along with our household items (work is paying for this). but I have a thought.....

What are the issues with tossing is a game or two in the container that we are allowed to ship over there? I know "wood" can be an issue with customs. Can some of the Aussie guys chime in?

We will be living in Gladstone, Australia....

Garry

RetrOmatic just had a Gravitar shipped down there, and I know badgamer has had a few shipped too. Maybe send them a PM.

Instead of storing...

Hey, instead of storing your games away.. If you have a couple trustworthy local collectors who have space, you should let them borrow your games.. Only reason I say this is because a good quarter of my collection is made up of other collectors games.. I keep them up and running and they let me keep them in my warm gameroom. Guess I'm kinda lucky though, as we have a really cool group of collectors here in New England..

Last year we almost moved to china for 2-3 years.. Had a few guys lined up to take care of my games while we were gone.. Thankfully we didn't move, as china isn't on my short list of places I'd like to live.

Guys ship games all the time

Wood products are fine, there is just a fumigation charge, amongst all the other custom, broker and inspection charges

Naturally you will need a step down transformer to suit, but a few posts on AA (aussiearcade.com.au) and you will have that sorted.

Why not post on AA before you go, there are probably guys in/near Gladstone already :)

All the best, any chance of fitting a truck load of gear in your luggage? (Joking)

Yep, and he had some major expenses when receiving it due to (lack of) customs brokers, quarantine fees, etc. You may want to contact him, or read his Gravitar thread...

That is what I am worried about.....I sent him a PM so hopefully I can get more details. But I will check out the thread.

If you buy all the cheap asteroids and space invaders (And others) you can find, and bring them over too, you can sell them to us dedicated game starved collectors, and offset your costs.

The above mentioned fees are not much more as the cab quantity increases, so the fees per cab is reduced big time.

Fill a container

Examples on eBay (Aust) recently
1. Space invaders $2k
2. Space Invaders $2K
3. Star Wars Upright $3.5K
They are over priced in my opinion

Dedi machines are rare here, so some guys in AU are trying to organise a container of 40 machines, but it all seems so hard to organise from this end

And after you get rich selling a bunch of Space Invaders' down under, scour that continent and bring us back a few more of these to lace your pockets further ;)

Hi Garry ,

Well i got the shipping Co`s notice of arrival [ initial thread post ] , then it came in , i had to pay for it`s release , based of cubic size , that was $ 365.00 ,
[ after a shipping cost of $800.00 ,
Then the fun started , the shipping Co , wanted to know who my Customs Broker was , i didn`t have a clue why I was asked that , i just assumed customs would go over my parcel anyway , that cost me $250.00 ,

Then it got stored , apparently you have to get it out of storage within 3 days , or you get charged per day / cubic size , i got stung another $300 odd for that .

In relation to you having a container anyway , and a few cabs in that , it would be different , as customs will inspect the whole lot anyway . i can give you the customs phone # that i used , plus an email address if you like , they will sort it out for you .

For god`s sake , make sure none of your gear even remotely has any drug smell to it , our customs are pretty ruthless , and WILL detect it with the beagles etc .

haha , hey , not ssaying you smoke or anything , but your friends might , etc , you know what i`m saying .

Let me know if you want some details ,

Cheers Paul .

Well moving to QLD will be a massive eye opener for you ! plenty of Kangaroo`s , lizards , you name it , awesome countryside , [ as long as you go off the main highway bypasses , you will really see what is going on , hope you find it a blast !!

Wow...thanks for sharing the experience. that is just crazy. I plan on asking the representative on this side that is helping with the move to see what I might run into as far as throwing in a game. I am thinking of my Jurassic Park pin and Robotron Cabaret.

Should know something in a few weeks.

My wife and I are looking forward to the job challenges and taking time to check out Australia.

Chance of a lifetime!

You will love it

You've got to check out the theme parks in QLD :)
Movie world is great
Dream world is Good
Sea World is Not Bad

Also
Gold Coast is awesome, I just spent 10 days there, had a great time :)

When's the big move again?

We will be heading there 3rd week in April.

maybe we can share contact info when I get there.

Personally I would ditch the JP pin and slot in two more dedicated cabs as you can fairly easily pick up most pins in Australia, but dedicated cabs are rare as hens teeth. Then sell the JP pin before you head back again.

Definitely check out Aussie Arcade to get a bead on the Aussie scene.

Good luck with the move.

Not sure if I will actually be able to take any but if I can which of the following would be desirable down there?

Robotron (upright or mini)
Joust
Defender
Make Trax (mini)
Donkey Kong
60in1 Multicade in a blue Nintendo cabinet (Donkey Kong style)

Thanks

Am I wrong to think this?
1st point .....Maybe you should convert all your games to run 240 here before trying to convert them down there. Parts are cheaper here.

2nd point..... If your in for a pound so to speak and your going to move games. Instead of just move a few games why don't you make it worth your while and Load a full container of games to go to the land down under. Sell the extras games and help defray the cost of shipping.

3rd point...Make sure you get extra PCBs for your games. Nothing worse that blowing up a board and then waiting for a month to get something shipped to you.

4th and Most important point have a great time and never ever go into a rugby bar and call their sport a girlie sport.

Defender and DK are desirable.

I think 30 x Dks would sell here easily

Knight76, do you agree?

DK and Defender?

Robotron (both), Joust, Defender and Donkey Kong.

The market is flooded with 60in1's due to the lack of dedicated cabs and even though it's in a Nintendo cab, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I would LOVE a Robotron of either flavor myself ;)

congrats on the future move to Australia..... your job sounds awesome. What industry do you work in? Nice to see companies sporting for employee expenses, especially storage.
