I'm moving and renaming some of the forum sections. It's a test. If it doesn't work it's easy to move back. I may also open up monitor and cabinet tech sub-forums along with several others. Voting will continue for the tech sections, and other new sections I'll take a poll of some kind on once I'm done moving them. Any new section can easily be undone, and threads in that section will simply get moved elsewhere.

So far I like it.

Any way to get more smilies? I know lots of people don't care about them but I love 'em. :D

Hell yes! +a billion.

I'll gladly submit mine. Best way to do this is make an official thread for people to upload smileys they like, then mods/admin can pick and choose which ones to include.

Puh-leeeeeeeze? :D

I like the new look.

Looks good so far, still checking it out. I think a seperate monitor section was a great idea along with some of the other stuff so far.

I agree on the smilies, they help to convey the intention behind some posts and can just be fun too.

Any way to make it possible to go from one sub-forum to another sub-forum without going back to the main section first? Perhaps as a Quick Link drop-down menu as is already above the posts?

Glad to see someone else here appreciates smileys too!

I used to have smly.org until the bandwidth got too huge for me to host it. Wish I would have kept it but I didn't so now it's just one of those dumb advertising pages. ;)

I still have some of the smileys here though in case anyone wants to look...

Hows about a Mame forum? Many purposes:

Some of us have mame cabs
Educate the Mamers about not putting a Nintendo 64 in a Star Wars cab
Attract new members
etc.

There have been some comments in the Anything forum here and here, in case you missed them, Greg. I closed the threads and directed them here for further comments.

Two people expressed concern that the pinball section was merged with something else but I don't get it. The pinball section hasn't been changed at all. Nothing merged, nothing separated.

While a good idea, there are a few other forums sections that could be added first, and we are not inclined to create too many at this time.

Also, using a tag of 'mame' on these messages would accomplish a lot of the same thing.

Greg is still working on the site this morning, in particular still moving categories around on the forum home page and attempting to reduce the number of words on the page.

Did we lose the General Discussion Forum now?

Can someone post a link to it?

This is payback for a couple days ago, isn't it Greg. ;)

How about this: "Arcade General Discussion" "Buy/Sell/Trade" "Monitors/Video" "Arcade Repair" "Everything Else"

Simple.....5 Main Headings....that's it. And keep the pinball stuff, separate, where it was.

It was fine the way it was. Please put it back. The use of this site has just become more cumbersome and jacked up.

Ok... So yesterday I created sections for every thing. Some people really liked them, some people really didn't.

This morning I wanted to see what I could do to simplify things.

I broke things up into three categories: International Arcade Museum, Arcade Machines (including all machine sections, all tech, all for sale, etc.), and a tiny non-machine category (for things like 'Chat About Almost Anything').

In short, it didn't look good. With just over a dozen sections in the Arcade Machine categories they sort of all ran together. So I tried something else.

I separated out Tech and Trading into their own categories. I then removed the sub-titles from nearly all the category and forum sections (only adding a few where clarification would clearly be helpful).

Instead of sorting by type of machine, I have sorted by type of discussion (general, tech, trading). It's part of my desire to support not just the majority videogame collector, but also the minority often-neglected collector of older penny arcade and EM games...

Removing a couple hundred words from the list seems to have helped.

I personally like the monitor tech section that was created and so do most of the people that have contacted me, though I know a few people don't. As far as the cabinet section, it is a little more unclear. Part of me thinks it would be fine to merge it back into general tech help, and part of me things that one of the advantages of keeping it separate is so it can occasionally be of help on non-videogame, non-pinball machines (ie: older wood arcade games, etc.). If those topics are buried in a mostly videogame section, they will never get seen by anyone else.

I'm done moving things around the home page for the day. There is only so much I (and you) can take at a time. Please give it a chance to become a little less unfamiliar and then let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Greg

Biggest question at the moment: Pinball

There are a lot of tech questions in the general pinball discussion area. There are also a lot of pinball tech questions that appear in the general Tech section, which I've currently labeled as "Tech: Video Games and Pinball - Repair And Help".

It seems to me all the pinball tech questions should go in one place,

either:

1) mixed in with the general pinball discussion section (like tech for music is within music)
2) in a mixed videogame/pinball tech section
3) in its own tech section.

(whether pinball 'cabinet' questions below in a 'cabinet' section if it is kept is another question entirely).

I have my only thoughts about choices 1-3 above, but I don't want to taint the conversation.. Please post here or pm me.

The new grouping of the categories and additions seem illogical and excessive. They should be kept separated, like they were originally, and along the following line...

Arcades
-General Discussion
-Repair
-For Sale
-Wanted

Pins
-SS General Discussion
-SS Repair
-EM General Discussion
-EM Repair
-For Sale
-Wanted

Misc
-Chat about anything
- jokes
-whatever other non-arcade related topics here

If you are worried about having to dig thru 10k+ posts then use the search functionality. Does there really need to be a separate forum for arcade related news or "interesting online auctions"???

Too much clutter. Use the K.I.S.S principle... Keep it Simple, Stupid!!!

my 2 cents...
