i'm picking up my first (and hopefully last) jukebox on Friday, a Rowe R-91 45-only, no CD changer. since we're moving it in my Astro and the van isn't high enough to haul it upright i'm pulling out the entire mechanism (two bolts and 3 or 4 plugs) and laying it on its back. as long as everything is secure it should be fine.

i'm used to moving video games, even stupid heavy ones (CarnEvil, anyone? i've owned two!) but never moved a jukebox. it'd be nice to be prepared with the right tools when i go to the pick-up, especially since the place is a long way from a handy store if i need something i didn't bring.

it looks like it has casters but i assume the casters are like ones on a Midway cab, good for short moves but useless for bumpy sidewalks and transitions onto ramps? i have two furniture dollies, and i was thinking of using these together with a couple of ratchet straps to hold 'em in place. i'll throw a couple of moving blankets over the top to keep the straps from doing any damage.

from those with experience, does this sound reasonable? i'll need to roll it up a ramp (2 steps) onto my front porch then lift it about four inches into my doorway. i was thinking the straps would help keep the dollies secure while making the transitions and keep it high enough to clear the door jam when one side is in the house and the other still on the porch.

anything else i should look out for? or should i use something other than furniture dollies?

Hi,

If you bolt down the mechanism/carousel, remove any records tape down the tone arm and memove the turntable and belt (these can be put into the cash bag). Screw down the amplifier and make sure that all the boards, coin mech etc are secured then it is alright on its back. I used to tape down over the door so that it can not spring open in transit.

When you get it in the van lift the bottom edge and place the bottom of the jukebox on a length of 4 x 2 to keep it from moving.

I would just use one dolly (the piano type is best because of the large wheels, we used these on pins and pool as well) it will make it easier to move and you can tip the jukebox to get around tight corners etc.

Best of luck.

Piece of cake! Just picked up my R91 45/CD combo today. Same place and transported it the same way. Two bolts hold down the 45 mech with turntable. Those will be removed and you pull out the entire mech and put it somewhere safe. I put mine on a seat with a seatbelt on it :)

Then I put it on it's back and straight up into the bed of my pickup. Transported it like that until I got home (~2.5 hours...after a flat...). Let it acclimate to the room for a couple of hours - on the advice of the individual I bought it from. Put the mech back in, and fired her up. Works like a champ!

Saw yours sitting there. Very nice. I ended up going with the combo and don't regret it a bit. Now i Have to get new gas pistons to hold up the front door, the ones with it are shot...

Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Ray

i think you got the better selection of 45's then if you got the combo. mine is filled mostly with country that i don't care about. ah, well, i've spent the last two weeks picking up cheap a bunch of 45's that i do want.

can't wait to get it! sold some PA gear that i haven't used in years to finance the purchase and it felt good to not be putting "new" money into another coin-op item.

Where'd you get your 45's. There are several good ones, but most in terrible shape. They play, but have a lot of hissing and feedback. It's not the juke, because some of the 45s that aren't shot sound great.

I would love to go look for some new records. Is there a place around us that sells them?

i don't know about new. since you're up north you might want to check out Golden Oldies in Seattle, and i know there are other stores in the city that cater to vinyl collectors. i've picked up some of my 45's from thrift stores and a box off of CL, but most of 'em have come from the Golden Oldies store in Tacoma where they've got maybe 10k unsorted singles in boxes (yeah, seriously, a huge huge amount) for 50 cents a pop. not all of 'em have turned out to be good but most are acceptable or better and for the price i can take a few duds.

If you guys are ever by Snohomish I have boxes of extra 45's you can go through a buck a piece and 2 bucks for some of the good ones.I have 80's rock, old records, minimal country, lots of ones i have never heard of,I also have about 40 spanish music records if your into that.and a bunch of others.....Dave

i might take you up on that Dave, or maybe send you a list of some specific stuff i'm looking for and see if you've got any.

as an update, the R-91 made it home just fine. pulled the mechanism, made sure everything was secure (or removed) from the interior, and rolled it out on the casters and put it on its back in the van. even just used the casters to get it into our house, didn't bother with the dolly at all. the ramp was awfully handy though, not having to lift it up 2 steps onto the porch.

all it really needs to be complete is a new 19w F26T8 lamp for the front door and about ten of the #73 mini-lamps for the chase. i'll order those in a few weeks when i've got a bit more in my budget. too bad that F26T8 is such an odd lamp; nobody local stocks it and it's cheaper to get it from Amazon than having a local store get it in for me.

oh, man, can i send you a bit of cash and have you stick a dozen in a padded envelope for me? i don't need 100...

and nice on the Gyruss. i picked up the one one last year that was Karl's, then Dan in Spokane's, then Karl's again, then Torin's, then mine and i love it. it's been around a bit but i put in the correct monitor frame and a near-burn-free tube, cleaned out the joystick and made it all look a lot nicer. definitely one of my keepers.

Sounds good man. I'll definitely give you a buzz! Cheers,

No problem, they should be here later next week. I also work in Seattle, so we may be able to arrange to meet there.
Cheers,
Ray
