Anyone have any advice on getting a game down carpeted stairs? This is a straight shot down with no door but there is a handrail. About 14 stairs. Could I just put a game on its back and slide it down slowly with one person in front and another in back?

You could do this but remove the handrail. If you can't remove the handrail then 2nd persons suggestion is best.

That's how we did it. We have hardwood floors though so we put a blanket down and slid it down. We had it hanging part way over the stairs and then I went to the bottom and we both slid it down. Having a person at the top doesn't help much, IMO. Just make sure it's one you want down their because getting it back up the stairs in NOT fun.

No worries.

I have slid many a game down the stairs to my basement. The person at the top is a big help when you need to lift it over the typical lip at the top of the stairs, but I have slide over 10 cabs down to my basement and never had a problem. You will obviously want to stuff the cord in the cab if possible and make sure you don't have any sharp points coming off the back door or anywhere that will snag the carpet. Otherwise, no worries.

Put it at the top of the stairs and push. Make sure the door is open....:D

JUST KIDDING, FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T DO THIS.

A dolly and a second person will do a much safer job of it. Just sliding it will work sometimes, but the resultant damage to the carpeting can be uneconomical. A good dolly from Home Depot is only $40 - $50.

Put a blanket under it and slide it.Way easier and smoother than the dolly.Going down each step with the dolly is a big pain.Jarring and bumpy.

Yeah, the handrail cannot be removed, but it doesn't limit the width. I just measured and even with the handrail the stairs are three feet wide. I have a dolly, but it doesn't have straps.

I'll just lay a blanket down and slide it.

We lay them on their backs, monitor facing up....get 2 people at bottom, and slide it down, letting gravity do it's thing. Just make sure you have at least 2 people if it's a heavy game. You basically are just holding it back, slowing it down. Gravity does the hard part. You are just slowing it down.

I just moved a cab down and used the dolly method with a pal. Worked pretty decent. I will have to try the blanket method next time though.

I've moved 16 games down to my basement. Of those I slid 2 of them, carried 1 w/ 3 other guys and 1 w/ 1 other guy, and the rest went on a dolly. The 2 I slid I did on my own and will never do that again... I almost got crushed by a Pole Position cab. The one we carried down with 3 other guys was a Virtua Racing upright which weights like 5 billion pounds... that sucked. The other was my Popeye cocktail which was no big deal. Most of the dolly'd cabs I took down on my own without any straps. The only one I ever really struggled on was my upright Vs. Dualsystem cab which was only a pain in the ass because of how big that thing is. It wasn't even ridiculously heavy.... just freaking wide. As long as you take it one step at a time and are in no hurry to get the bottom it is generally not a big deal.

games going down steps

I built a sortof monorail that looks like an extension ladder, it's 11 ft long for 10 steps, it angles at each end to compensate from the top step where the game first goes over and at the bottom where the game reaches the basement floor.
The rail boards are hickory hardwood floor boards that stand up widthwise so the wheels from the aluminum dolly ride on the outside of them, when the cart reaches the basement floor the wheels take over the weight. The game will tend to slide down but one person at each end of the game works fine, no problems. there is no banging on the nosing of the stairs, it just glides down..and this goes anywhere like a ladder, just support the weight and it's easier on the back that strait carrying.
if you have more steps, build a longer one.
I use the aluminum cart from depot that has the smaller hardened rubber wheels with the wrap around strap, pricy but a good investment in game moving.

I've moved them down stairs with 2 people on a dolly, and with carpeted stairs by letting it slide on its back. If the cabinet has good handles on it (midway cabs, nintendo cabs, etc), we usually do a 2 man carry straight down and then you don't have to worry about messing up the carpet or hardwood.
