I've got a Super Breakout that I'm slowly bringing back to life. When I got it, someone had tried to patch in the wrong power supply. I realized that it was the wrong supply and never fired it up until I could get the correct one. After months of searching, I finally got the atari B&W supply for it and fired it up today. Thankfully, the game plays blind (so no destroyed PCB, YAY!) but my monitor chasis blows fuses. I pulled it and found R67 (10 Ohm, 2W) to be a little toasted, but the rest of the board looked clean. After removing the resistor from the board, I measured it at 8.2 ohms instead of 10. Could a 1.8 ohm variance be causing me all of my problems? Should I be looking for other issues that caused the resistor to go bad, or just chalk it up to ~30 years of use makes anything break?

Fuses blow because of shorts. That resistor is probably toasted because its feeding something that's drawing a lot of juice. Look elsewhere.

But do replace that resistor, after you find the short.

I replaced the resistor and fuses, and they blew again. This time I had my monitor out of the cab and got a much better idea of what was going on. Just before the fuses blew, I saw some smoke comming from the steering coils. I put my multi meter on it and sure enough, I got about 175 ohms on one set and 1.5 on the other. Now the question is what I can I do about it? Can I get a replacement coil? Where? Since it's just basically a magnet, does it need to be specific for my model monitor?

Back to the question of interchangable parts, There are 2 23" Motorola B&W monitors on ebay. I haven't gotten a response back from the guy yet, but they're probably M7000 monitors. Would the steering coils from those fit my M5000?
