Most unique place you have bought a cabinet from

Picked up my dedicated Vapor Trail and Sly Spy from an old "restaurant" (extremely small building, little bigger than a large storage unit). Vapor Trail was my first repair, Sly Spy didn't survive the winter on my grandmother's porch. I had no place else to put it, but at least it was in the worse condition of the two. Got them both for $150 IIRC. Vapor Trail is still kicking. The same guy ended up giving me an old Big Event Golf converted from a Q*Bert. I used the cabinet in my film "VectorZone."

I thought this might bring up some fun stories. I've personally done everything from buying cabs from friends, auctions, arcade operators, imported them from other countries, etc but the most unique place I've bought a cabinet from has to be right down the road from me.

So this story requires a little info setup. I live out in the middle of nowhere. Absolute nowhere. No regular size groceries, convenience stores, cinemas, rester aunts except for mom and pop smoke filled American diners, just the post office, a couple real small time businesses and the movie rental store.

The movie store has changed ownerships a couple times in it's life. The most recent owner thought it would be fun to add a couple other things so he bought a couple arcade machines. A bad dudes and a dual monitor playchoice 10. Well, no one stuck around long enough in the store to play the arcades so he put them up for sale. I can't really rememb why I even stopped in. I think it was before I had Netflix because I certaintly haven't stopped in since. He wanted $200 for the bad dudes and $200 for the playchoice. Well I gladly gave $200 for the playchoice! Probably the best steal I've gotten as well. From what I had found out he had had them for sale for months as well and I was the only one who had even showed the slightest interest. He tried heavily to unload the bad dudes on me as well but I had no interest. Now the playchoice is in bad shape but it still works which was the important part. Plus it had a lot of great games in it like metroid and mike Tyson. I've only recently started working on it and trading carts for my perfect collection.

What similar unique stories do you guys have?

Man, that's a trip! I have a similar story...

3 hrs from home, Anderson Ca. Staying at my girlfriends sisters house for the weekend. There's really nothing in Anderson.. We were visiting to attend her sons graduation. Rachel and her sister went out and stopped at this old mom and pop video store, and rented a few movies, one was wreck it Ralph! When they came back, Rachel said hey they have a t Tetris and a centipede, something else can't remember..

That night late, they all decide to go to this casino, not a gambler, but I went along, and watched awhile, Rachel was in this Michael Jackson machine, It was a pair. I gave her 10 bucks and watched her turn it into 90 real fast, so I decided to play, very quickly I ran my 10 bucks up, to a crowed gathering 347 dollars. I said I'll play down 50 and see what happens, Rachel hit the print voucher button, said we are out of here!! Now! Smart move. so I had to mention the gamble part, cause it comes into play later. We turned 20 bucks into 437 or something that night!

Soo, leaving town Rachel said we have to return the movies on our way out, I said sweet I'll get a few quarter down those machines. We pull up, and I notice that attached to the movie store is also a used appliance store. I quickly spot a ms pacman in the sea of washing machines and fridgerators. I make my way inside, and work my way over to take a look.

The guy that runs the video store owns the video store and the appliance store. He notices me Checkin it out, and approaches me. Says its for sale! I say how much? He's says make me an offer. I asked if it works, he says no. I ask to look inside, he says sure! So I open up the back, it's all their. No blown fuses... nothing was missing. I say, well I I give you a Hundread bucks, he says make me a reasonable offer! I says 150! he says I was thinkin $300, meet me in the middle a 200. I said you know, I just can't, I'm away from home, I don't need another machine.

He says I tell you what, I was spose to go to Reno this weekend, and I didn't get the chance to go gamble. lets flip a coin. I win, you give me 200, you win, you can have it!!! I started counting money in my wallet!!

Rachel's say No!!! right, right, right, sorry sir, I can spend a 100 dollars, and no more, he says deal, sticks his hand out and we shake!

Totally! It's worth it, but I have a bad habbit of buying machines by stumbling apon them, not looking for one.. I now have 12 machines, and a pin. Thing to note about that is, I'm still young, and work alot, I don't make a ton, so I have to hustle to get these things, and I usually by broken machines cheap... Fix them... Slowly as I can afford. Time and money are valuable to me at this stage in my life..
