Most underrated pins?

Hmmm, this is a good (and rather subjective) question. For my choices, I shall go by Manufacturer.

Williams -

Star Wars Episode 1 - This machine seems to be despised by RGP, but I actually like it alot. Sure, it's a little stop and go, but I think the theme works very well with the way it was executed into the game. Plus it's Popadiuk, so I am going to naturally like it. Not the best game out there, but I enkoy it every time I play it.

Big Guns - Yes, it's simple. Yes, there's not alot going on, but damn, I just find this game to be FUN! Love the cannon shots. Would buy one of these in a second if one was local (and the cheap-ass Chris price).

Time Fantasy and Barracora - For the artwork alone. Not sure why, but I LOVE the art on these 2 machines. Today's art does not seem to measure up at all.

Bally -

Flash Gordon - Often overlooked because it is not Multiball, this is a great 2 level machine. Bonus if the strobe light actually works!

Elektra - Old school multi level game with great sounds and speech. Missed out on a cheap one when I was first collection because it did not work. If I had only known, LOL.

Gottlieb (including Premier and Mylstar) -

I may take some heat on these choices, but I could not play enough of these when I found them on location:

Hot Shots - A bazillion drop targets, and an accelerator ramp. Hot chick on the uninspired backglass. I find this machine to be alot of fun.

Lights, Camera, Action - Another Premier game that I find alot of fun. Novel changing playfield, backbox animation, and fast play make this another WTB for me.

I am sure some will disagree, but that's what makes this hobby fun! Different stuff for different people.

Just a quick response... I vote Congo. Terrible movie, good book, good pin. Underrated.

... Altan

Johnny Mnemonic
Demolition Man
Judge Dredd
Congo

I concur with these, would add Shadow and Starship Troopers (also mentioned here).

Other underrated games are many of the Data East games: Rocky & Bullwinkle, WWF Royal Rumble, Tales from the Crypt, Last Action Hero, etc. DE games often have a ton of modes and multiballs, plus spinners, scoops, captive balls, and interesting shots galore.

A really underrated game is Lost World: Jurassic Park (Sega). Not particularly deep, but it has a clean classic 'fan' layout, plus 5 modes that you have to activate and then finish, with not a single pf shot shared between any 2 mode shots. You really have to be able to hit every shot on the pf to rule this game. And it is fast as all get-out when cleaned. Several pin fanatic friends have really gotten into this game at my place, and they all say something to the effect of "I heard this game really sucked but it is great!"

Another somewhat underrated game, not as cheap as the above, is World Poker Tour. This game is incredibly addictive. My CV and LOTR have been gathering dust since I got it a few months ago. One key tip: speed up the flow by removing the gate at the top left orbit (2 screws) and disable flop and turn posts in the software. The game really moves with these tweaks.

I got to go with Rollergames (my first pin, so biased) but if you can see past the theme and cheesy art/ sound package, its a great player. Fantasticly fast with great flow and enough shots to keep me coming back for "one more"

I'll say Funhouse - it's not top 10 on IPDB and it's cetainly not a machine that gets ranted and raved about. It's generally affordable as most B list titles are. The rule set isn't deep per say "advance the clock to invoke midnight multi ball", but you have 8 shots to the mirror, 6 lane shots, 1 to rudy and one to the kick out. Then 4 possible shots on the ramp. 3 ways to get an extra ball.

Notice I didn;t focus on the talking dummy. But he certainly is the icing on an already awesome cake. I still smile when I hit Rudy 6 times on the same ball as he'll say, "YOU BIG ......... SAUSAGE" As you score the 250,000 sausage award.

First game to have dual plungers. To me this game just has damn near everything a person could ask for.

"I heard this game really sucked but it is great!"

"I heard this game is amazing and really sucked" is what I can say about a few "A" list titles so to each their own. Some games are just too hyped up and at the end of the day your collection should reflect what you enjoy to play and not the supposed majority.

I wouldn't say FH is an underrated game as the the price of it certainly doesn't reflect that. What I think defines and underrated game is the bang for buck value. I've played several games that cost between $3500-4000 and if you ask me if I would ever want to own it I'd probably pass and take two lesser "B" list titles in it's place.

I don't think that I've ever heard someone say that FH is underrated. Seems to get plenty of love.

A ~$1800 - $2200 pin these days is expensive? Where you shoppin dude? The Good will? :)

And I do agree best bang for the buck. ~$1800-$2200 IMHO is a GREAT value for a pin especially in TODAY's market.

royal rumble. i know im biased because i own it. and many people are turned off by the theme. it has 9 modes, mini upper playfield, lots to shoot at. wont ever be a top ten game. but for the price and for what it offers a solid pin imo.

Taking a break from writing your book "I'm always right and need to prove it"?

Seriously - your need to post after me is getting old. Enough is enough. Choose some one else to stalk for a while will ya.

Bang for the buck - http://www.pinpedia.com/machine/Funhouse/statistics
It's not a top 10 game and to me personally I feel it is much more fun than half the A list games.

lol

Don't flatter yourself.

funhouse is listed as #15 all-time on the pinside forums. i do not believe this pin is underrated.

but that's just my personal opinion.

when i'm thinking about underrated pins, i'm thinking #75-90+ that need to be in the top 20 or so for fun factor alone. that's why i mentioned who dunnit and starship troopers.

as a side note....i was happy to see SST move into the top 100 recently (pinside rankings). horrible theme....fun pin.

No love for Whitewater?

Granted it's been a long time since I've played it but I always loved it and you rarely hear anyone talk about it.

I also really liked Terminator 2.

These are both talked about alot on RGP from my memory. I wouldn't call either of those "underrated" but that's just my opinion :)

Looking at the pinside ratings, Whitewater is holding pretty good at 17. I still think it's underrated at that spot.

I fear you're going to end up with the same people saying, "Oh lot's of people talk about it, it's a highly sought after title therfore not under rated" because very much like Funhouse it is one of the more popular Williams games. I assume "most under rated" is supposed to be meant in the context of "not spoken of often" instead of best bang for the buck.
So if that's the case then I guess that makes us both wrong.

Not even a Data East category? :( Those tend to be pretty underrated--many sell for under $2k, tend to be surprisingly fun to people who weren't familiar with them, and have a lot of bang for the buck. (For some reason, Judge Dredd really feels like a Data East game to me.)

Games like Funhouse and Whitewater are not underrated IMO, but fairly rated. They are uniformly popular and not bargain-priced. Most of the other games mentioned here are not generally on the A or B+ lists.

As for $2k being pricey, it's all relative. As mentioned above, many fun DE games can be found for closer to $1k. Picked up a fully-working Last Action Hero for $800 a few months back. Very fun game and a deal at that price, but not even a $2k game. Just got a Mars Trek (4-player Sonic EM) for $400--a very fun EM. $2k is hugely expensive by comparison! Then again, $2k didn't seem that expensive when I paid just that for my NIB CV. :)

Well, if you need some examples for Data East, I LOVE Time Machine and Phantom of the Opera. The music on POTO is incredible!

Data East made some great games! Batman and Star Wars are very fun, for sure!
