most underrated pinball

Whitewater and Fishtales don't qualify as underrated. They are too uniformly popular.

Whodunnit? Not my fave, but I can see the appeal. Dr Who is a tough but fun game that separates the experts from the average players. I like Sorcerer (Wii version) and also thing Space Station is a similar underrated pin. And I like Jackbot much better than Pinbot!

My 2 picks for underrated pins are:

Starship Troopers: a really great Sega game, good shots and modes, despite the screeching bugs. A solid game that people who have never played it (i.e., most people!) really seem to like.

Lost World--Jurassic Park: This is the fastest pin I've ever played, easily. Good layout of shots, 5 modes that don't share a single shot to complete them between any 2. Kind of tough scorewise, but scoring is balanced and and you really have to earn the points.

One of my all time favorites. I made a few LED changes to mine :).

Also have to agree with Congo. I used to own one and wish i still did. Very cool shots (around the volcano is nice), good multiballs, and nice sounds and art.

Have to agree with the DEMO Man as well. Pretty plain and simple, but the movie quotes are fun, and has some interesting playfield features as well. And its a wide body! :)

funny you should mention those two....my buddy andrew over at marco has both of those in his shop right now. i got the opportunity to play both of them about a month ago and was very impressed with both. i must admit i wasn't expecting much, but after playing them i totally agree with your assessment (ST - great shots/modes; LWJP - fast, fast, fast! very fun).

I played that game for the first time in Houston and I found it to be uninspiring. That tiny flipper is the goofiest thing I've ever seen. It's as if they randomly attached spare parts from other games to that machine.

I didn't see it that way. Besides setting up an easy left saucer shot off the small flipper (trapping the ball with the large flipper held up), the small flipper has a surprisingly solid shot to the left ramp.

Funny you mention those two, of all games. Someone I know whose opinion I value once mentioned those two games in the context of "worst games ever made." I've never played LWJP before, can't remember playing Starship Troopers. So no opinion of my own to offer from a gameplay perspective.

lol, that was my exact thoughts too. Frankenpin. Was not impressed with troopers at all for play. Much betters pins for the money out there.

i think they both fall into the category of crappy theme/look like shit, but are just fun to play. :)

but i've only spent a little time with both....not sure how they'd hold up to long term play.

There was a Starship Troopers on route by me that I used to play quite a bit. I think it's a fun game, but Sega pins definitely have a very different feel to them. I can see why some people would hate them.

Exactly why they're so underrated! ;) LW:JP isn't deep, but it is very challenging and straightforward, with good array of shots. And hands-down the fastest game I've ever played. Always good for a pinball session. I've owned one for 12 years now. Makes a great addition to any collection of 'mellower' pins. Good shaker integration too.

As for Starship Troopers, a few friends who had never played it were surprised that they liked it, incl. one friend who purchased one, was going to lend it to me for a while, and decided to keep it at home!

Definitely not the worst games ever made. I have been playing for about 40 years, all sorts of games, and I would rather have either one of these than, say, a TZ (which I really do not like). OTOH, I'm a big fan of Popaduik's games, most of the other "top 10" pins (MM, AFM, etc.), EMs with drop targets and/or spinners, etc.

Whirlwind has gotta be one of the best older machines. It's fast and has a couple of great toys with the spinners and the fan (if you have the topper).

Out of all the games I own, I keep going back to this one.

Yea, it's possible that it's one of those games you have to play a bit to appreciate. I did like having another button for a third flipper but it just seemed so bizarre every time I played it I felt like someone broke something on the playfield and attached whatever would fit.
