Most REPLAYABLE games- not a plain old top 10 list

Oh my gosh, I forgot about NBA Jam/NBA Jam TE. That game seriously has some of the greatest replay value, and there is NOTHING like getting 4 random guys together to have a complete showdown in 2v2 basketball. Just an excellently crafted game, and it's hard to get old of it because it's so competitive and well...basketball. Also the skill level is up there with the Golden Age games because of that frickin' rubber band AI.

You're 2 points behind with less than three seconds to go, you take a last ditch shot from DOWNTOWN, sails across the court and...

BOOMSHAKALAKA! BULLS WIN THE GAME!

God, that just never gets old.

Any game you can have on Free Play and just keep continuing to the end sucks as far as replayability (hello, Guantlet).

^^^ this. I can see owning a game like Rampage or Gauntlet ONLY if I had people over every weekend or something. Hell, even games that I'm extremely fond of like Heavy Barrel get stale due to the continue option.

My top 5 replayable games:

Crystal Castles (biased here)
Berzerk
Galaga
Joust
Robotron

Male escorts aside, you don't _have_ to continue every time, do you?

I play Metal Slug on my MAME cab all the time, and you can continue -or- use cheats to have unlimited ammo, super weapons, invulnerability, you name it.

I turn on the cheats for guests or kids but not for me. The availability of the cheats doesn't ruin the replay-ability for me. If anything, it has let me see the higher levels and given me something to shoot for.

Replayable you say?

Top of the list is Sea Wolf. I have never known one person to not love and want to play that game multiple times. The rest of my list is as follows:

Pole Position
Centipede
Berzerk
Galaxian
Mario Bros

BTB, IMO Toobin is one of the worst Atari games ever made. Not only is it not re-playable, it's barely playable.

Can't believe you put Toobin on the list. Any game you can have on Free Play and just keep continuing to the end sucks as far as replayability (hello, Guantlet).

Play a game that is both challenging, addictive, and ready to kick your ass at any given moment - like Robotron...

Did somebody say my name?

My top five would probably go something like this:

Robotron
Tempest
Firefox
Red Baron
Gyruss

the next five would be:

Missile Command
Asteroids
Joust
Galaga
Dig Dug

Sinistar is a great game, but its really all about staying alive long enough to get the highest score.

I almost forgot about Wizard of Wor, it should be in my top five. Mostly because of the two player fun. Like Joust, its the most fun when two people play it.

I'd put Robotron at the top of my replay list. I could get rid of everything, pins included, and just keep this one. I might just have to bring this game with me to the nursing home.

Another game, Jurassic Park Lost World, does not seem to get old. Yes, it's an odd choice and it's a rail shooter but I have never been able to succeed at every challenge in a single game - and I have never been able to save the guy on the motorcycle. Plus there are high scores and accuracy to shoot for in every section of the game. The Dinosaur theme never seems to get old. It seems that just about every arcade - Gameworks, Dave and Busters;etc, still has 1 or 2 of these in operation. I actually prefer the upright to the environmental. Even with the swap out of the projection TV with a new monitor the graphics don't look as good in the environmental compared to the high res monitor in the upright. This always seems to be the most popular game out of the 20 or so vids and pins I usually have running at arcade events.

I never really understood the point of owning a Gauntlet. The whole point of the game was to eat your quarters and have you play neverending levels with no end to the game at all.

My current list of games I've found myself revisiting:

BattleZone
Space Dungeon
Asteroids Deluxe
Tapper
Robotron 2084
Elevator Action Returns
T-Mek
Magical Drop 2
Die Hard Arcade (not sure what it is about this game but I always come back to it even though it's not aging well by today's 3D standards)
Gauntlet Legends
War: Final Assault
Tank! Tank! Tank!
Dirty Drivin'

Mine are:

- Aliens
- Galaga
- Asteroids
- Samurai Showdown 4
- Marvel Vs. Capcom
- Puzzle Bobble
- Neo Turf Masters
- Addams Family Pin

Neo Turf Masters

This is actually a very good game for those of you who like golf games (Mario Golf, Hot Shots Golf, etc.). Developed by Nazca (Metal Slug, In The Hunt). Crazy hard though. I can do okay on the front 9 on most of the courses, but get pwned on the back 9.

i feel so out of place. almost all my top ten are jamma games
i think my favorite classic to play that never seems to ge old is Popeye.
It's probably mostly Nostalgia that makes me want to play it over and over.
Other games:
Raiden 2
Smash TV
Mortal Kombat 4
Street Fighter 3 third strike

I can play those games everyday as long as i have a partner or opponent.

this list is subject to change as i discover more classics

Totally. The back 9 is always killer, especially after a few drinks enjoying the first 9!
