What are the most cabinet styles for any one game?

Many games have 3 cabinet styles:
(many) Upright, caberet, cocktail
(eliminator) upright, cocktail 2 2player, cocktail 3-player.
(rampart) upright 2 player, upright 3 player, cocktail???

Some driving games likely have more: upright, deluxe sit down, deluxe with motion, and life size sit down (like the life size motion subaru wrx initial D ver 4 I just tried and wished I could take home...).

As I think of adding cab styles to KLOV/VAPS, I'm thinking I should take into account that it isn't as simple as upright, cocktail, etc. as some games have multiple upright models or multiple cocktail models etc.

My magic question is... Who can come up with the game with the most cabinet styles? And how many would that be? 4? 5?

Outrun had an Upright, Mini, Deluxe, and cockpit.

Also Greg, if you're gonna be naming the different styles, it might be easy enough to list the seperate models and have variations marked as Style A, Style B, and so on per each category. Example: The two different cockpit variations of Star Wars. I've made both (thanks to KillerKades) the European style and the American style as Sketchup models. The difference is the shade of blue. I listed them in the database as Cockpit syle A and Cockpit Style B.

You get the idea...

Ugg... I didn't even think of 2 SW cockpits. I'd be inclined to list just 1 entry for cockpit under SW, and add a memo under the description talking about the 2 styles. I bet add a little sun to a US version and the blue will lighten up a little bit too.

I'm thinking of artificially limiting the # of cab styles on any 1 game to 5. One question is whether or not that is enough?

I would think 5 would be enough. Even when contributors have uploaded Sketchup models to the KLOV database, no one game seems to have filled all available (5) slots.

Meet Robotron:2084

Robotron cocktail
Robotron mini (regular)
Robotron mini (prototype)
Robotron upright, straight profile
Robotron upright, wrap under style (http://www.arcade.chezsuys.com/Robo1/DSC04435.JPG)
Robotron UK style

...and, I think some Robotron uprights did come in Joust style cabinets, but maybe I'm thinking of the wrap under style; I couldn't find a picture online to confirm.

And if someone finds a Duramold Robotron, then you're really in trouble :)

The worst offender, by far, is Pump it UP. AM designates each cabinet style with a two letter code. All the styles so far:

* SD (short-lived due to being way too similar to the original DDR cabinet)
* DXv1 and v2 (v2 is very hard to find; it's about a foot shorter in the back and has a plasma monitor in lieu of the RPCRT in the v1)
* SXv1 and v2
* GXv1, v2, and v3 (no immediately visible differences, mostly just different monitor chassis and some wiring changes. v3 has an LCD.)
* FX
* TX
* and now CX

Many of those appear to be running different software based on titles/screen shots. Those would be considered different games.

Don't forget the cocktail version that popped up in the UK.

Is the artificial limit something that you can easily change later? Or will changing it later be a serious pain in the neck? If it's easy to change later, I'd set it to 5 or 6 and see how you do. My only thought is that with some of the newer games they keep bringing out cabinets with different monitor sizes as the game ages, and that might end them up with many cabinets that differ only by monitor.

I wouldn't get too specific on types otherwise it could be so many variations. I would use very general types. For instance:

1. Upright
2. Cabaret/Mini
3. Cockpit/Sit Down
4. Cocktail

I think these categories pretty much could cover the majority.

Crazy Climber has to be a legit contender:

Taito UR
Taito mini
Nichi Cocktail
Nichi deluxe
Nichi standard UR

Dunno if there was a taito cocktail or nichi mini or other int'l versions?
Am I missing any other CC versions?

Tom

Yes and no -- any of the softwares shown are officially supported on any of the cabinets shown. PiU is very kit-oriented, in that you're expected to buy one cabinet and continually upgrade its software.

-E- Actually SDs are now very rare in the first place. However, most enthusiasts own an SXv1 or DXv1 that's been kitted up to MK9/FiestaEX, and this is actually what AM wants people to do.

What about games that were only (or mostly) released as conversion kits? Arkenoid comes to mind. I have seen it in just about every cabinet imaginable.
