ok so I got a sound board with no roms on it so I got the roms burned from hobby roms and here's what's going on.

I went and did a diagnostics test on the sound board and it passes no errors

when you power up the machine I get the normal one tone sound, but nothing after that. sometimes at random I get the one tone out of nowhere. a couple times music was playing then shut off. it's all random and weird.

any advice? I need a new battery for my multi-meter so I will check my voltages at the pcb tomorrow, maybe re-seat roms... anything else I should do?

Sounds like the ribbon cable might be on backwards. Just a thought if the guides don't help.

Thanks for that. You were right and that was my main problem. Now I have working sound but my second problem is my volume pot is not 50,000 ohm so the volume is very loud and the volume goes up and down.

so problem solved, ribbon cable was on backwards and I need a 50,000ohm volume pot

Zenomorp has some Black Ninja Mortal Kombat Skills.

Edit: sometimes when you put the cable on backwards it will say "irq error......" ect.. or it should (as stated in mecha's write-up).

the IRQ error is caused by no communication between the boards, which the ribbon cable does. you'd get the same thing without the power harness because there'd be no power going to the sound board. lol

the only condition that wouldn't matter so much would be the absence of the volume pot, but you just won't have sound. the pot completes the audio circuit. HOWEVER, for whatever reason, you could still get the ding sound when you turn the game on. and I think I've had a condition where it would do it again randomly while playing the game with no sound. that was awhile ago though. lol
