From what I have heard a dedicated Mortal Kombat 3 is more scarce than any of the other Mortal Kombats. First, is this true? Second, how many were produced? Why were so few produced? And to my knowledge thereisn't a dedicated Ultimate MK3, it was a kit or rom swap right???

From what I remember, MK3 didn't last long in the Arcades in its original form. Once the UMK 3 revision came out, literally every single machine MK 3 machine was converted with a new Marquee and new Sideart to go with the update. I assume this would be why a dedicated MK3 machine would be very scarce. The old Marquees and side arts were probably destroyed as well, so they would be hard to find.

Now my question is, was UMK3 an optional upgrade that vendors had to purchase, or was it a mandatory upgrade that Midway provided for free? I find it a bit odd that after the UMK3 update came out, every single previous MK3 machine that I saw was upgraded, especially if it would have cost vendors money to do so.

I'm not sure how many were produced, but I've never seen any difference in the side art for MK3 vs UMK3. I've heard the MK3 boards are harder to find because so many were changed to UMK3, but the upgrade likely had no effect on the cabinet other than the board and marquee.

You are correct. MK3 dedicated cabs are the hardest to find. The reason is that they made so many MK2's that when 3 came out, most OP's bought the conversion kit instead of a new dedicated cab. Therefore, they didn't manufacture many dedicated units. UMK3 was not a free upgrade. It requires 9 roms and the security pic to be changed on a MK3 board.

If UMK3 wasn't a free upgrade, then it was damned cheap, or MK3 was the worst earning game ever... (either one is concievable)...

MK3 dedicated probably was the lowest production number (due to conversions) but likewise it's VERY hard to find an MK1 that wasn't converted to 2 or 3 or UMK3... Fortunately there are still 3's and 2's around with the original MK1 artwork! Mine MK1 was a UMK3 but the sides weren't painted, so it was not too much work to convert back.

I just scored a ultimate mortal kombat 3 in a mortal kombat 2 cab. but was wondering it seems to be the very first rev. is this one worth more? Should I change the board out or revise it. or leave it as b
