Mortal Kombat II- Finally installed the Challenger Roms!

I've been cleaning up my MK2, took the lock bar off (finally) and am working on filling in the holes/painting, as well as restoring the CP back to all it's glory, so I figured I'd throw in the set of Challenger Roms I've had sitting around and give it a try.. After having them back in, I must say this is a must for anyone who has an MKII PCB! I especially like the extra time to remember/execute the fatalities! :)

I did a quick search so I could provide all of the changes for those that don't know about it:

the Mortal Kombat II Challenger (sometimes called Immortal Kombat) chipset has some special features including a more difficult fight ladder that often begins with Kintaro or a hidden character. Other notable features include the multiple Dead Pool Fatality where you can punch the opponent out of the acid and make them stick in the air (and just a normal uppercut will knock them in the acid to begin with). Johnny Cage has full time red shadow moves and all of the secret characters can appear on the fight ladder. You also have super extended (infinite?) time to perform fatalities, fight Noob a lot sooner, play Pong a lot sooner, and uppercuts are faster.

Nice! I need to pick up a set of those. Also need to fill the holes on the front of my MK2 where the lock bars were as well...

im gonna pick em up, I know bulldawg always has em. My whole thing is even on easy its a pain in the ass to get past the 3rd character. With the challenger roms forget it, I probably wont beat the first. I got to kintaro once but havent beaten him

MK 2 is one of the best fighters of all time, but the computer opponents in the arcade version flat out cheat, even on the easiest settings, and Kintaro himself is damn near impossible unless you get lucky or spam him with Kitana's fan wave. It used to drive me nuts playing this, knowing that the computer was programed to anticipate you every move and knew how to counter it. Still, it's one of my favorites, and one I would like to add to my collection someday.

I think it's too easy without the challenger roms

I agree. Challenger Roms give the game more re-play value IMO, it's just more interesting to play all the way around! And it's easy to convert back to stock, but I don't think I ever will now :)

I would like to try this ROM set out. How many chips are involved and where can you get them?

Kintaro is a big cheating POS!! I can beat him but only with Sub Zero. Jump Kick, slide kick, freeze, uppercut, freeze, uppercut, freeze, uppercut, freeze, uppercut. If you don't beat him in a couple of tries he seems to get harder and harder to beat.

Its only two chips. If you want to try other versions they are all just two chips. Pretty cool to see how the game evolved to the final versions. I used to sell the upgrade chips years ago on ebay. And the MK NBA Jam roms, too.

Sweet! I love seeing other collectors' MK II cabs. :) It's one of my all-time favorite games and favorite cabinets. The Raiden side art is just too bad ass!

I never understood fighting the computer, lol....this game is meant to be a 2 player game and always will be...

That strategy won't work on the arcade, I'm pretty sure. For some reason in that video Kintaro's uppercuts are registering over the player's jump kick. Must be in MAME or something, because you can actually see Kintaro's uppercuts contacting the player, but they aren't counting.

Mortal Kombat 2 has some really strange priority rules in its fighting engine. Against the computer, on medium difficulty or higher, the CPU will always have priority, period, even in instances where it makes no sense at all. Kintaro definitely had absolute priority with all his moves, and that Uppercut move you point out makes no sense unless it's a glitch since that move will ALWAYS get priority.

Yeah, he will uppercut the s**t out of you if you repeatedly try to jump kick him like that, or grab-throw you. This thread makes me want to go kick Kintaro's ass. I'm off to play MKII :)

Every time I see my ol' MK4 cab in your pics, I kinda wish I had it back, but then I see all of it's brothers next to it and I know it's found a good home. On topic, I need to find an MKII some day.

That's incorrect. Make sure the game is set to Hard/Very Hard and this strategy works. When it's set to Medium, it only works part of the time, but this was done on my dedicated machine and NOT on Mame.

I will have to give it a shot on Hard. Thanks for the tip. I tried your method briefly on Medium yesterday and Kintaro stomped my ass. Every 3 out of 4 jump kicks he grabbed/slammed or uppercutted me. I had to revert to the freeze/uppercut method.

What I hate most about MKII isn't Kintaro (read below btw), but it is that half of the characters, Cage being the worst, just walk up and throw you. Even out of a footsweep from sweept distance they can get a throw off. That was always my biggest knock.

And as far as Kintaro goes, if you jump kick him deep he will often uppercur before you even land, you almost stall as the kick hits, what I found out is jump kick him where you just barely contact him, and if blocked footsweep right away then quick jump kick (as in kick on the way up not on decent when close to him), repeat and he dies.
