Story:

Last week I picked up a non working Surf Planets site unseen. When I got there it was clear this is a Mortal Kombat with the sides painted black. Cabinet is in very good shape, and artwork appears to be intact and well preserved under the black paint.

Dilema:

My options are to strip the Surf Planets stuff out and probably just dump in the trash as it doesn't seem like they sell for anything, sell the monitor, and then strip the paint off, make a new top for the CP, and sell the cabinet to someone looking for one.

Or I just sell the whole thing as a working Surf Planets and mention that it is in a converted MKI and mention that for a few I will build a new CP if someone wants to convert it back. Basically I am just trying to get as much out of it as I can; I figure the most valuable thing is the burn free 25" monitor.

Opinions?

In our area, MK 1 and MK 2 will still sell for $350-$400 IF they have all the arts in good condition. That being said, if it can be converted back by simply removing the paint and getting the necessary parts for a good price, you stand to make some cash while keeping a great game floating out there.

The surf planet stuff should sell as a complete kit for enough to but a new MK marquee. ;)

I guess the price that you paid for the cab in it's current state will dictate which direction you'll end up going.

Agreed. It depends on how much you are willing to invest in it if you are just trying to sell it. I'm not sure how much MK parts go for, but it would most likely get more appeal and potential buyers if it were converted back to MK.

Interesting....well I am looking to make around $125 for this whole thing, right now I am in it $0.00. Maybe I will list up the project in the forsale section and CL as is and see if I get any bites and then I can go from there. Thanks for the input, wasn't aware the MK could still fetch some coin.

Its still a good game (although no where near as good as MKII) that holds up today. The first games appeal is mostly on the artwork. People love it. This series had the greatest arts of any fighting game genre.

CPO $50
Marquee $20
Controls $40
Boards/ harness: $75

So, you should stand to make a decent bit of change if you don't factor in your labor.

Well I lucked out and 90% of the harness is there and unhacked. The only thing missing is the CP harness. The only bummer was that I found the Flyback took a crap, so I will have to replace that and I might as well cap the thing while it's out. If anyone would like to take the whole project for a Benjamin let me know.

I'm sure I'll get mocked for this but PM sent on the Surf Planet gear... Let's just say I feel bad for the guy and want to help him out... yeah, that's it... ;)

No one is mocking you here. To be fair it's a neat little game for it's day. The problem most people seem to have with it:
It keeps finding its way onto cp's to great games. Thereby ruining the old, great game and building a reputation as a classic killer!

I just noticed it, but it looks like your avatar likes my avatar... LOL

I can't believe I never looked past the afro to see what was on the canvas, that's classic.
