Hello, I have a mortal kombat 2 dedicated cabinet with a jamma boards.com 6 in 1 switcher in it running all the MK games. Recently I have noticed that when I power all my games on through the power strip, that MK lights up but wont turn a game on. I noticed that the LED on the back of the Peter Chou or the switcher do not illuminate but the marquee and coin doors light up. I originally thought it was a loose wire in the power cord but I am not sure thats what it is any more and I went all over the coard messing around with it and the game still didn't work. Normally if I pull the game out and mess with the power plug, it would start working and the Leds illuminate on the power supply and switcher telling me that it will now work. Any ideas what may cause this intermittent issue? It seems like its getting harder and harder for the game to turn on now. Is my power supply bad and causing this?

I would try replacing the PS first. Probably the quickest/easiest thing that has the greatest chance of solving the problem.

And if it doesn't solve the problem, it steps you to the next thing to try! :)

I have an older computer that I have lying around. The power supply in that did work the last time the PC was used. What would I have to do to hook this type of power supply up to the game? Is it just a matter of cutting the ends off the wires and using wire connectors and hooking everything up to the correct voltage? Is there some type of wire color chart that I can follow to see what wires are what on this power supply? I figure it would be great if I can just use this one I have lying around collecting dust as I will never use that PC again.

I helped you. the talk about computer power supplies in video games can now stop.

the grey wires go to the +5, the grey and yellow go to the +12, the grey and green go to -5, the black wires go to the GNDs. the AC wiring goes from green to FG, to violet on the top AC, and violet/yellow on the bottom AC.

when you're ready and have it installed, then you have to develop balls the size of grapefruits to adjust the voltages properly.

show me pictures of your 6-in-1 setup when you're done, like where did you mount the boards and how are you supporting them.

Got home, turned the game on. It was acting up again, marquee lighting up but no red light on back of ps. Turned game off and unplugged jamma cable from switcher to try and test a separate pcb. Before I plugged the pcb in, I figured I would test it again. Now the red LED is lighting up. Plugged it back into switcher and it worked again. So, still not sure if its the switcher or ps or loose wires in the ps?

BTW here is a link to a video that I made after I cleaned up the switcher install. I originally was going to mount the switcher on the bottom of the cabinet, but decided to build a shelf in the middle of the cabinet and install it on that. I think it turned out pretty good. Let me know if you need more info. I have my switcher install documented on youtube as a how to install switcher.

looks like when you were cleaning up your wiring you twisted the jamma harness a bit to tighten it up? if not just say so, but if you did (sometimes) the pins in the connector can be loose and not make a good connection try twisting it one way or another and see if that fixes the issue.

have you fixed the loose power wire you mentioned in your first post?

i would not use a PC power supply (period), replacements are cheap

test the machine with just a PCB hooked up not the switcher, if the pcb alone acts up it's a connection/wiring/power supply issue, if it works fine it's an issue with the switcher or a bad connection to a board on it or something along those lines (is my thoughts).

just out of dumb curiosity, was your 6-in-1 modified for -5V already? it won't have any bearing on your games not running, but it's crucial for MK2-4

I can speak from experience. If the power supply has a short either coming in, or coming out of it, it shuts off to prevent damage. Sounds like the switcher is causing the issue to me because if you unplug it and plug a board directly to the Jamma harness and it works, I would say there's a short in the switcher somewhere.

Thats not what I wanted to hear. I have no idea how to find a short in the switcher. With all the bad rap this switcher has been getting I am wondering if there is another switcher that could be used that would be more reliable.

It makes a lot of since what Zenomorp is saying... but could it be that the power supply isn't strong enough for the load. What would be a good upgraded supply for the load he has vs. the original one that was good enough for 1 pcb?

I do remember one time I was trying to test the voltage at the power supply with the multi meter. I was doing everything right and I was testing it the way I was told. the power supply must've switched into protection mode as it wouldn't work for five minutes or so. I'm wondering if it is power supply issue. Ever since I pulled the Jamma harness off of the power supply and put it back on its been working so I am not sure. I will let you know if it starts acting up again. I am interested in what would be a good power supply to use with the six and one switcher.

Mecha already posted a link to a Happ power supply. As far as switching power supplies go, that's the probably the best one you can get and it's cheap too.

just order one and try it. Worst case scenario you have a good backup power supply.

i never thought i'd be giving advice on this forum
but i can guarantee its a power supply issue
i just went through the exact same thing with my mk4 dedicated
worked sometimes
sometimes only the marquee was lighting up

your power supply is dying
make sure your volatage is set before you plug in the end connector

thnk brood and mecha for it

it has been working more often than not. The past three times I turned it on it worked. The one time it didn't i unplugged the jamma harness and plugged it back into the switcher and it started working. I have been busy with other things and it has been working so I have yet to replace it. Thanks guys.
