Mortal Kombat 2 cab discovered

Awesome progress! The best looking MK cab of the series IMHO (as well as the best game).
Damn straight mk2 was the sheeet
side art is best, I like mk3 game as well but the art I think is meh lame, and when I was younger most mk2 machines were converted to mk3, so I even played on mk2 cab, mk3 board combo a lot when I was like 15 and sheet.

6/8 Update:

Got to put the kids to bed tonight and began starting the other side. Some scuffs and the like but I got the technique down now with better results. I used Citristrip again and hammered out two sections within the hour. Followed up this time with a generic green dish scrubbing pad and got the leftover paint off much quicker too. I'll have the cab finally stripped before all the rest of the cabinet parts come in by Thursday (hopefully). I got a MK 1 complete control panel coming from Ctozzi and a manual from the Arcade Boneyard that came in the mail today. Props out to them as well as our standard vendors for T-molding and leg levelers. I'll have the final set of updates after I get it done. Had some issues with the AC voltage and a ballast that was posted on the repair forums too. Thanks for all the help KLOVers! I know it's not a showpiece but will be fine for my taste!

to remove the gunk that is left over on my space duel I used extreme goo remover from wal mart. black can with red top. it worked great but make sure you use a clean cloth so you dont spread around the black paint on the white parts. it works great and wont damage the art work.

6/12 update:

I'm at a stand-still until I can relocate some parts for the control panel. I got a dedicated MK1 control panel box but need to change it out cosmetically and look for the right joysticks and wiring. I think Citristrip changed their formula to a more liquefied solution-- don't care for it too much. I'll have to hit up the local hardware and hope that the last jug on their shelf is from the same batch.
Here are pictures of today. Did another section of stripping, neighbor came over and helped me while I fastened up the leg levelers and plates, got some new red T-molding on the areas stripped. I had problems with the front portion of the cab being pried loose from the sides. Apparently someone pried it farther apart to fit the NBA 4-player control panel on it, weird. That has been fixed as well. Enjoy--

I think it's one of those epileptic seizure warning stickers.

Final Post:

Pretty much got all the wiring of the control panel figured out today. I had to scratch build a pair from junk I had in my parts pile, what a mess! I know the CP and CPO aren't dedicaded MK2 but it will work for now since I had NOTHING to begin with. Maybe sometime I'll spend some cash and get a dedicated CPO if it warrants it. I have one small section on the left side that needs stripping but that's about all. Side art isn't perfect but it looks better than black paint.
I wonder if anyone bought a set of side art from mammarquees? I noticed that they sell a set for $189, to which I can't spend the funds on.
It was fun to do since I never really tried a restoration before. I can understand how time-consuming it can be for sure! I just need to order a cap kit from Bob and I'll be all set for now, thanks for all the help and input getting this thing going everyone!

Looks good. So you won't be making a post showing those last few inches of black paint stripped off?

If you got a MKII CPO, you'd never know the difference in the CPs. Looks good though, a very nice resto/un-conversion.

Come and get it, it will soon be heading off to the trash man next week. Originally, it is from a NBA cabinet that has been converted a couple of times.

Usually people leave the original Mortal Kombat serial number tags on the inside, or you may be able to make out the graphics if you look hard enough at the black paint, if it is indeed painted over..

I was just reading this thread and decided to go take a close look at my generic black cabinet with the MK tag inside. If I look closely in the right light, I can see the Dragon circles, Midway logo, etc under the black paint. Thanks for the tip. It's a MAME cab now, but I may just strip it for the artwork.
