This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most successful fighting games/franchises of all time. Last year I built an upper aux monitor to commemorate the 20th of MK1. This year it's MK2. When I broke everything down and moved the machines from where they were to where they are now after remodeling my house, I never re-used the upper aux monitor for the MK1. It just went into storage. I originally built it not just to commemorate the anniversary, but also to give my nostalgia a "fix" as it were because I was 13/14 when MK1/MK2 came out and I have very fond memories of standing about 4 rows of people back and having to watch the upper monitor that the operator had installed to see the action. Good times, so I wanted to recreate them to the best of my ability.

I got a hair up my rear end today to install the aux monitor on the MK2 for it's 20th. So, here it is. Took a while to get all the colors adjusted because when you split the signals, you're dropping their strength in about half, so you can't just turn up the contrast/brightness of the aux monitor. You have to adjust all the RGB pots as well. This is about as good/close as I can get. It looks better in person, but doesn't even compare to the badass-ness of the 24.8" Makvision I have in the actual cab. Anyway, here are the pics. Opinions?...

I can remember the first time I played MK II at an arcade. I was on a family vacation in Canada at Niagra Falls and spotted a dedicated MK 1, but I could only see the right side of it from where I was standing. After getting some quarters from my parents I went to play but when I saw the front of it, I realized it was actually running MK II. :) After that encounter I saw my first dedicated MK II on another family trip and this time it was at a rest area. On that same trip I recall another place that had an MK 1 and playing that as well. Finally there was a local party store that had a dedicated cab that I played on a lot. My cousin used to live within walking distance of that place so we would go there pretty much anytime I would go to his house. MK II is still my favorite in the series and I just can't get enough of the awesome side art. I've owned my MK II machine for 9 years...can't believe it's been that long!

That top monitor looks to be better color than the main!
Bravo!
I really love the additional monitors atop any game. MK and DL come to mind first...

How do you like the makvision? I was thinking about getting one when you could still find them but i never did. Did you have to do anything special to make it work in your mk2 cab? Did you have to modify the bezel in any way?

I have had a few and they were all POS, most of them ended up failing prematurely. And no one could repair them. I avoid them. It seemed they were just rebranding inferior imported junk.

I like the additional monitor....I never saw a MK2 in the arcade with one, but it looks cool. I also cannot believe it has been twenty years...sheesh. This was a HUGE hit back in my local arcade, I remember the lines to play this machine. In fact one arcade has several of them, because it was such a hit!

Pretty sweet idea. I remember not being able to see what was going on when people mobbed games. This would have been awesome.

I remember my parents had a beach house on lake Huron. It was in a little town called Caseville. I used to walk to the local arcade (If you could call it that..only had like 5 or 6 games) and I used to play the shit out of MKII. They had it and I was addicted. I remember it being like 110 degrease in there all the time.

They also had a Sega Time Traveler. I played that once and died almost immediately, so I never played it again...I mean..it did take 2 quarters. What a rip off! LOL.

The second monitor looks great. I agree the top one looks like it has better color. Why did you replace the monitor? Mine still has the one that came in it and has a great picture. MK2 was the most played game at my sons birthday party this past year.

I actually bought 5 of them and never had an issue with any. All work flawlessly. Guess I got lucky. I have one in all my MK cabs and they all look great. Here is a review I did of them explaining the monitor bezel situation...
