I was watching a short bio on the hidden characters of Mortal Kombat last night, and it got me wondering - did anyone ever naturally find Reptile/Ermac/Jade/Noob Saibot back in the day? The hints for MK2 are so out there it seems like it would have been an impossible effort to figure out.

I found the secret characters in the 90's by reading video game magazines, and I only found them in the home console version (we had no real arcade in my small town, and EGM focused on consoles). I'd imagine it would have taken a coordinated effort to share the hints and test different methods to try and reach these secret characters in the arcade. With no internet to ruin the process of discovery, were there any coordinated efforts in the arcade world to find them in the 90's? I'm sure some publication made accessing these characters common knowledge at some point - but I'm hoping some awesome story exists out there of a group of friends eventually figuring it out.

Just FYI, Ermac was all a big hoax. But it's pretty cool that he is now a staple character because of that hoax.

The only one I ever actually faced in the arcade was Smoke in MK2 because it was just random if toasty showed up on the portal stage. Other than that, I never faced any of the other ones until I had an emulator. I don't remember how I learned about them though.

This is a really cool link with all the rumored hidden characters. I came across this last week when I was searching for the EGM issue that had the initial Ermac hoax posted in it. There are screen shots to it on that page as well as some other really cool stuff on there.
