I was having trouble with the backgrounds scrambling on my Q*Bert machine a few weeks ago. Pulled the IC at E7 on the board and cleaned it and it remedied the problem. However, I re-arranged my room yesterday and the issue returned. I think the problem is either in slot E10-11 or E7. When I pulled the Mostek 4118 RAM from E10-11 one of the legs fell off, so that could be the problem. The other possibility I am looking at is that the RAM socket E10-11 is bad. If game is booted with no chip in this slot there is no scrambling, but also no backgrounds. If there is a chip there but not in E7 there is scrambling, but again no background. I figure both must be present for backgrounds.
If it is the RAM socket (E10-11, or E7), is it repairable or am I looking at having to get a new board? If it is the RAM chip, where is a good place to get those?
Thanks to everyone again for their help.

It's totally repairable, you won't need a new board. For which SRAM's have a look at this thread http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=100798

But basically 2016 and 6116's will work as a replacement. For parts there's always Bob http://therealbobroberts.net/parts.html or arcadechips http://arcadechips.com/

thats an understatement right there... :)

Been working on getting eveything added to inventory...lots of work. So far I have around 6,000 ram chips on the list. Eprom count is up to around 5k. I have most of the 74LS inventoried too. I havent added those up yet but its a ton, probably close to 10k.
