I bought my PSP 1000 used, and while it works just fine, you can tell it's used. I'm looking to replace the analog stick, since it seems a little off, sometimes it will 'jump' instead of moving smoothly. I'm also looking to get a colored shell, I'm thinking either the yellow or the turquoise color I've seen online. Are the 'smooth as silk' faceplates any better than other shells? I would kind of like a full shell replacement, but honestly only the faceplate has a small crack near the bottom screw, and I'd be fine with replacing just the front.

I already ordered a three pack of UMD cases, since I bought some used games and the cases are cracked and falling apart.

Can I order one of these analog sticks off ebay for $4 and expect to get something that works? If I get one from a parts site and it's $13, is it the exact same quality as the ones on ebay?

Any preferences on where to order replacement parts for this thing?

I can't answer your question - but did you buy Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins for that thing yet? It's a must-have.

I did a custom PSP 1000 a couple years ago. I did a full custom shell and replaced the joystick and did the custom firmware thing. The joysticks on eBay work just fine. As for the shell, I suggest doing just the faceplate unless you have a lot of time and patience. It is a nightmare to change the shell on the 1000s. You have to take everything out and try to reassemble it all in a shell that is a very tight fit. It is very easy to break small parts in there. The faceplate and joystick are cake because almost everything is screwed into the back half of the shell. Also it is good to take video or a lot of pictures of the process because it is easy to forget what screws and parts go where.

I bought all of my parts on eBay and the end result was amazing. I wish I still had pics of it to post.

This is what I did to my 1000.

I don't know where to get the smooth as silk any more, I would try deal extreme and play asia.

I really like the SNES D-pad in there. Good job.

Sounds good, I was thinking faceplate only just because the back half isn't damaged at all really. The only reason I was thinking full shell was because it would look cool, but I don't know if I have the patience for it. I've already had the faceplate off when I bought it to clean under the buttons, so that's not a big dead.

I've seen the smooth as silk on a couple of different sites, I'll see if those two sites have them, I've ordered from both with no issues in the past.

Another question: the UMD door shuts and plays games fine, but one side isn't completely flush, it sticks out a bit. Would replacing the door with a part like this fix it, or is it more about the metal hinges (which I don't really want to mess with)?

It is more about the metal hinges...not the door itself. The only reason it would be the door would be if one of the little latches on the bottom was broken.

Oh and take some before and after pics to post on this thread.

The UMD door that is not quite closed. Any advice on this except to replace the entire hinge assembly? Is there a bit I could put pressure on to get it back in place? It works fine, it's just a cosmetic annoyance.

I'm pretty sure mine has been like that since it came out of the box. Maybe not quite that bad, but still a bit annoying.

Wow, that looks almost exactly like my old psp 1000, except I had the d-pad from the ps1.

Alright, I went ahead and ordered a yellow 'smooth as silk' faceplate and a replacement white analog stick. The faceplate comes with a white nub, so I wanted to make sure the underside matched. :D I'm not really sold on the icons they put on the buttons that come with it though, I may reuse the old black ones, I guess I'll just have to see how they look when it gets here.

So the underside of the new analog stick is still black, I guess I just looked at the photo wrong? Whatever, it works fine :D It didn't at first, the analog stick was wandering all over the place. Turns out that the solution is to just make sure that the faceplate is really tightened up, or else the weird little rubber thing with wires won't make good enough contact.

I would have liked to have both halves in yellow, but evidently the smooth as silk brand only does faceplates. The finish feels really nice, it's closer to the texture on the back side, but smoother (and no fingerprints!). :D The screen is no longer flush with the faceplate since the plastics are different, but it looks great. It came with two choices of yellow buttons, one like you see, and one with weird logos instead of the X, O, Square, and Triangle. I considered keeping the original black buttons, but I went with the more modest of the yellow ones. The buttons on the bottom of the screen stand up higher, which I like, since the stock buttons always felt kind of mushy to me, like I couldn't tell if I had actually depressed them or not.

I'm pretty happy with the results! :)

Wow! I like the yellow faceplate better than my red! Back when I got mine it came with 2 sets of buttons ones with original O X [] and ^. I used the icons instead. Of course the buttons were silver and not color matched. Also even though the screen cover and faceplate are different material mine is nice and flush.

Yours looks great!

Well, by flush I mean there's a 'break' between the two types of plastic vs. the original version which has a smooth surface with no division between black and clear. The new one is level, but if you run your fingernail from the yellow onto the screen, you notice a very small bump. Nothing wrong with that at all IMO, the yellow doesn't pick up fingerprints, and the clear still shows the screen perfectly.

OK I thought you were saying that the screen part was not level with the rest of the case. Yes mine is the same as yours.
