moral dilema. found money in a game, what do you think

i guess i dont really have a "moral dilema" as much as i was wondering what all of you would do. theres no way in hell i am giving it back since he knew it was in there, and i dont feel bad about it. like i said, if he left his wedding ring in there it would be a different story. i just dont understand everyone that is commenting that it "would be the RIGHT thing to give it back". where do you draw the line between say 10 dollars and 121 dollars. if this was a large business then it wouldnt be an issue. i guess i dont understand why people are trying to "guilt" me into giving it back. ohh well, i dont think i am going to bother with it anymore. i have already invested $60 dollars back into the machine making it "restored" so i would think that most people on this forum would say it is going to good use. and besides my two year old loves it so i am happy. thanks for all of you comments, pro and con, Tom

I have bought a couple machines here and there, the seller has every opportunity to take out cash from machines they sell and or ignore that there may be money inside, hard to not miss the sound of money clanging in it while loading it up.
Funny story though, I bought a machine from a lady who was clearing space in here garage, I asked her if she had the keys for it, she said "we never had a key we just used quarters to play it".
Thinking there might be a few $$ in it I got it home and drilled out the coin door lock......not a single cent inside.....I did find a set of keys attached to the wring in the coin door that opened the back door though.
If she used money but had no key...than how is it empty????:D

There's no right or wrong here! He knew there was money in there. It would be a nice gesture to give him some of it, but you totally don't have to and it sounds like you won't. No big deal.

Welcome to arcade collecting on the Internet. Everything you do is morally wrong to somebody and when made public, there is always one guy out there that thinks they need to guilt trip you over it.

This topic was begging for keyboard based moral warfare to break out.

The guy I got my last two machines from said they both came with keys. Only one set worked. I had to replace locks on the other one. The few bucks in quarters I found in the machine helped pay for the locks. It all goes back into the hobby.

the right thing to do

i think you are breaking the law so.... i will contact the original owner offer him more $$ for the machine and have you deliver it to my house. wait this sounds familiar????

keep the $$$

he knew it was there and didn't care. done!

No offense, but this is rediculous. Jesus Christ didn't go around helping businessmen make more money, for free.

Now if you would have taken the 1 grand and gave it to a children's charity, blame that on your Christian upbringing.

Just my .02

You missed the part where I said *old* operator; not businessman. The distinction being this was a little old man who drove a crappy car and wore flannel shirts that were a study in wear and tear.

And yet this guy that didn't appear to have much, couldn't have been more generous. My unwritten point was that "he" was my charity- do you see it now?

Christian upbringing in the whole sense of "do unto others as you would have done to you". I didn't write or imply Jesus went around helping businessmen make money for free. (THATS ridiculous after all, right?)

then if i have to live by that philosophy , i better quit doing the things i'm doing to my wife in bed. dont want that in return...

2nd thought... Separation of church and state... i think we should institute separation of church and arcade....

Let's go look into the "MONEY FOUND IN GAMES THREAD" in the polls section, and see how many of those people wanted to give the $$ back.

I'd like to convey my respect for the Klovers here who have shown a high standard of morality.

i was given a pretty decent Golden Tee classic earlier this year, didn't really consider the possibility of it having any cash in it since they had it for several years before calling it to me to come get it. well, of course when i later cracked it open it had a little over $60 in it, i split the cash & gave them $30 and then repaired their other game for them.

they are happy & so am i.

Offer to give HALF of it back. He knew there was money in it so I would not feel so bad.
Here is what I found in my new machine last night...I like the Chuck E Cheese ticket.

i disagree. i think in both scenarios you should keep the money. if you sell something, should you not be obligated to make sure you know what you are selling. if i sell a game i will look in it for money first, if i don't its not mine anymore after its sold. now if i left my medding ring in there i would say the buyer mas a MORAL and CHRISTIAN obligation to give it back. but this is MONEY.

Late to the party, but here's my $0.02. If you are selling a device that is *designed* to contain money (as games are), it is the sellers obligation to check for money inside before selling it.

It is a totally different story if you buy a crappy painting for $1 (for the frame) and you find a $100 taped to the back of the picture. Or you buy a couch and there is a wedding ring in there. In both cases, a reasonable person would not have checked and it's probably that the seller likely had no idea it was there.

I got bit hard by karma once, I learned my lesson well. Call and ask about the key, tell him you did find some money (not how much) and does he want it back? The rest will take care of itself.

After all is said and done, remind him that you are always looking to buy games. You never know what might come your way.

10 pages of reading and now I got a headache.. Laughs.

Legally you don't own the person who sold you the game since he knew there was money already in the game.

BUT

Tell me this do you really want to look like a less or more of a man in front of your father in law? While this deal will come and go and you may never see this person again. Your father in law will be with you a lot longer.

Yes, you can Keep the money and tell your father in law to keep his nose out of your business and deal with the after math of your actions. Legally your in the right but remember your father in law will remember your actions. Is hassles with the extend family worth the trouble?

just my 2 cents
