moral dilema. found money in a game, what do you think

Look, if you give it back because it makes you feel all fuzzy and warm, what you're really admitting to is being greedy. You're only doing it for yourself you selfish bastard. Time to stop thinking of your own feelings and just keep the money as self induced punishment.

It's just a completely asinine argument.

It is an asinine argument. Good thing that's not the one I'm making. The end of my post that starts with "Edit:" makes that pretty clear.

And Jamburglar ended the thread. Nothing more needs to be said after that.

You can't prove that. The seller did not have the key, and did not know the amount of money in there. What the seller knew or didn't know is all assumption. What is solid fact is the guy sold a machine with $120 in it, for $40. The seller should be contacted and told.

If the circumstance really is that the seller knew, then it doesn't hurt to tell the seller about it.

If the seller didn't know, then keeping the money is wrong.

Edit: The fact that the OP even had to ask shows that he thinks this deal is questionable. No one posts a thread asking "I bought a game for $50, it was exactly as described and I paid for it. What should I do?"

No assumption made. Seller estimated the amount of money he heard in the machine and indicated it was for the buyer. Please read the original post. Also, the buyer didn't start this thread because he thought it was questionable. He started it because an uninvolved 3rd party thought he should. That 3rd party is probably missing the point much like yourself.

Your call. When you ask for opinions from a large audience, you will get every response possible. Bottom line, do what your gut tells you to and move on.

What would I do? First, sell me that machine with the quarters in it for $40 then I'll let you know. :p

Maybe. The OP asked "what do you think" . I posted my opinion. You posted yours. Hurray for us!

I am coming down on the side of "Hey, maybe the guy didn't really know. He also underestimated the amount by $45. Might be nice to double check". That's all. You would want the same courtesy, wouldn't you?

The fact that you felt the need to post here asking for advice is the telling thing.

Yeah, someone else was giving him shit.

So, what you're saying is, his real moral dilemna, which he can't figure out without you justifying it for him, is whether or not to tell his father in law to shut up and mind his own business?

Well, in that case, I think he would be justified in stealling money from his father in law because let's face it, he's always prying into the guy's business. Plus, the father in law sounds rich so he can probably afford it.

Anybody else need any advice?

if he was nice i would give him some back, he knew there was 75 in there, so thats yours to keep. i would give him back a half of the difference to be nice ~$20.

The guy knew there was money inside and sold it anyway. Even joking about it. To me that says keep the money and don't think twice about it.

It's not bad karma. It's not dishonest.

I've given away tons of stuff for free that the person turned around and sold for profit. Did I complain? Hell no. I said congratulations. I chose to give it away for free. What they do with it after that is none of my concern. Same situation here.

EDIT: Like Friz said. If it was a friend I would give it back. An operator... no.

If you have to make a post titled "I have a moral dilema" then you already know what you should do.......:flute:

i really think that the bottom line to this posting is that the people who say keep it are being realistic. the people who say give it back are the same people that are too lazy to look in the game before they sell it or have got burnt in the past.

like someone pointed out before, the money belongs to the game. thats where it lives, thats where it belongs... and now i have the game..... and his money!

If it's going to haunt you for the rest of your days, offer it to the guy, or at least the difference in what you paid. If not, don't worry about it. He acknowledged he had money in there (probably didn't consider THAT much though) and was selling it to you anyway.

I got two machines last month and while loading into a truck, quarters were dropping out of it as we were moving it. The guy's wife picked up the quarters as we went and said... "That's coffee money for me!" But they didn't stop me from continuing to load them. I might have found $3 or $4 more in the machines altogether. At $100 I might have tried to contact the guy to be honest.

Do what you feel is best.

If by "being realistic" you mean "broke as hell" and by "too lazy" you mean "too stupid" then I would agree with you.

I also think that the other thing to be learned by this post is that when one has a disagreement with their in-laws its probably best to just keep that in the family, otherwise all the realistic people and all the lazy people start thinking they are lawyers and moral theologians when really lawyers and theologians don't give a damn about $121.

I think people who would keep the money wouldn't bother to ask anyone if they should keep it.
Kind of like breathing, no one tells you to do it, it just happens without even thinking about it.
If you have morals and are contemplating giving the money back I think that speaks for itself, no one should talk you into keeping it if you can't feel good about it in the first place.

When he bought the game, he bought what was inside the game.

What if instead of the regular pcb there was an extra rare (valuable) pcb in there? Should he have to give that back too? What makes the money special?

Should all the guys here that found rodents and such in cabs they bought get reimbursed for these extras? No, because they knew the risk going in. Just like this seller knew the risk of money being in the coin box. He just chose to ignore it.

Little off topic but this reminds me of a story. I bought several games from an operator. 2 Truck loads. I was driving back on the interstate and the guy following me in the other truck called and said: "Everytime you hit a bump, quarters fall out of the cab that is in the back." We chuckeled about it. When I unloaded it, there was around $25 in quarters left. I always wondered how many were left laying on I65. That deal was game and contents so never thought to contact operator and tell him where his quarters were. :)
