moral dilema. found money in a game, what do you think

i bought a gizmo jr gumball machine from a business owner for $40 yesterday. he didnt have the key but said he would look for it. when we were loading it we heard coins moving around and he laughed and said " you probably have about $75 in quarters in there". when i got home and got into the machine i found $121. jackpot! now my father in law... is trying to guilt me into giving the money back. i think he is crazy. what do you think. what is the craziest thing you have found in a game.

Keep it, he already expected there to be 75 in it and didn't say bring back what you find or have any concern about what was in there.

there are some old threads about the same subject somewhere in this forum.

Keep it. When you buy a game that's the way it goes, whatever's inside belongs to the new owner. There is another thread on this.

I found some Viagra in a game one time. Didn't give it back...

I will have my secretary send all the necessary paperwork for the immediate return ......... bwahahah just kidding. It's your money do as you please.

the fact that the seller acknowledged that there was money in the machine is basically the go ahead to keep it. If you want to give some back that's up to you. As for anyone trying to guilt you into giving it back I would tell them to mind their own business. Seller could have made an effort to open it had he wanted to rather than just selling it. He didn't care based on his actions.

Practice good Karma. Offer to give it back. He won't take it any way, but it'll come back to you 10fold somewhere else.

I picked up a machine that I was going to repair for someone once that had $190+ in quarters in it. I gave it to him immediately, and he handed it right back to me and told me to keep it.

I think of myself as an honest guy but if it were me I'd go right down the middle. If you got $121 out of it, You bought it for $40, and he expected there to be $75 in it. Give him $81 and say thanks for being generous. That way you got it for free, he got something out of it and it's all good. No regret or negative thoughts. Hell, you never know, he may refuse the $81 and tell you to keep it. Then your conscience is clean. (don't go in expecting that to happen though).
Or just give it all back to him and tell him thanks. It really was his money to begin with anyway. Just think of it as a wallet that you found on the road with someones ID in it and $120. Would you return it and keep the money?
I wouldn't, I'd just give it back as is.

Quarters

If you feel like you got over on him, roll up the quarters and give him half of what you found back. And tell him that is half. If he baulks, give it all to him. No need to sell your soul for $120. I am guessing that he did not care though since he did not empty it before you got it.

Last week I bought a game that was loaded with tokens. While paying the seller the $100 for the game I asked if he wanted the tokens. He clearly said no, I listed them in one lot (over 1000) on Ebay and they sold for $61 plus shipping. Since I specificly asked, my conscence is clean.

Huh

Beat me to it.

The one time I've heard money in a machine, I just agreed with the seller to split it down the middle. It had $1.75 in it, no big deal, but I kept my word. Since you seem to know the guy, I'd do this and just call it even. Everyone walks away happy without guilt.

Sounds like he just wanted to get rid of that thing.

got to agree with you there.dont look for good deeds to do,let them find you.
;)

hes already asking so thats a start, offer him 50% of the money back and you can both laugh and feel good about it and god will surely look on you in a good way i would be sure of that.
:)

Not the same thing at all. A better comparison would be buying a wallet at a yard sale and finding $120 in it when you got home.

Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger, sometimes you're the ball. That money is yours.

unless you said you would split it with the seller, or the seller said he wanted half of whats inside, its yours. He knew money was in there. if he did not take the time to empty it, thats on him.

Now if you want to win major points with the seller (plan to get stuff from him later), then you should consider giving him 1/2(or at least offer).

There is no moral dilema on this one as long as there was nothing said about splitting it..

My policy on this...

If I buy from a friend or someone I will be dealing with in the future likely... I give it back. If it's a CL deal or someone you'll never see again... keep it.

The only time this ever came up with my is when I bought my Race Drivin from a local collector. Even though I'd never met the guy before, the fact that he had multiple games said to me I'd likely see him again. I found about $40 in the game if I remember correctly. I emailed him and let him know... he told me to keep it. I did.
