I started with this:

The previous owner did some restoration on it but the sides were blank.

Monitor has some real bad burn and will be replaced with a new one

Used Citristrip to take off the old paint

See it really was a Moon Patrol

After striping the paint, I sanded it down to get it nice and smooth and take off what Citristrip had left. Looks like the previous owner had done some bondo work on the bottom.

Bondo work wasn't done too well and needed lots of touch ups. One section of plywood was bubbling so I pulled it off

and repaired with more bondo

Next up was the base blue color. I used Glidden WGB13 Caribbean Sea and mixed in a little yellow to add a lit bit of aqua tint to it.

Then it was time for the stencils

For the blue, I used Glidden WBB18 nautical Blue

Now I just need to put it back together. I'll get some good shots of the cab in natural light once it's back together.

Great work by pRok on these stencils. They really did a nice job.

That is a jaw-dropping stencil job!!

With spraying- how long do you wait to pull off the stencils?

Thanks!

I like to get the stencils off as soon as possible. I'll usually wait until the paint is just about dry to the touch. With oil based paints, the dry time is much quicker and you can get them off quick. With latex, you'll have to wait a bit longer. I think on these I waited about an hour or so.

Yep, I just used rattle cans for my Joust and I definitely had better luck with the edges pulling off the stencils almost right away.

Nice work! The colors on a Moon Patrol cab really pop, it's one of my all time favorite cabs. Fantastic artwork. Did you remove the coin door to paint it, or did you leave it on and paint the entire front black at the same time?

Man that came out great! Love that Williams stenciled art. Moon Patrol for some reason left a little mark on my soul. I can remember the very first time i played it, exactly where, and exactly why.

Great job!

Normally, I take it out and strip it down first, but because the previous owner had already painted the front, it was in good enough shape to leave in, mask off the coin reject and locks, and repaint in place.

Amazing (as always). Looks like it just rolled off the assembly line!

If I may ask, what is the time frame start to finish for a project like that?

Thanks,
Chris

It really varies project to project and I'm usually doing more than one at a time. If I had to guess, I'd say this one will have about 80 hours into it when I'm all done. That includes research time trying to find parts and the correct paint. That took a lot of time as I had to make multiple trips to different paint stores.

Also, after I did the first stencil, I wasn't happy with the blue color so I started over.
