i recently got a moon patrol and when i disassembled it for the restoration, i realized there was a loose wire on one of the connectors coming from the linear power supply. the wires from the secondary side of the power supply split up into two different connectors on my moon patrol and it's the upper one we are talking about. here's a picture of the connector still attached to one of the pcbs (circled in red):

and here's a close-up picture of the same connector. i've labeled the individual "connector slots" 1 through 5. you can see that there are wires in slots 3 and 5, while there are leftovers from other wires in slots 2 and 4. and then there's this loose wire i was talking about earlier. it IS sliced up, so it looks like it was connected earlier, i'd say slot 1, but i can't be sure. the colors don't match either slots 2 or 4!

my questions: does it have to be connected to slot 1, does it have to be connected at all and can i remove those leftovers in slots 2 and 4?

First, you have a Bad connector and a bad header. Fixing the connector will be a very short term fix at best. (roughly 3 months give or take)

This is a very common problem. Replace that header on the ps first. Throw both connectors in the trash, and install the single 15 position molex that is required and all will be good.

I have both if you need them, and will set you up for $3 plus shipping.

The connector in question should be a 15 position IDC or Molex with the key at pin 7. The section that is burned up on yours is very common and covers power input pins 1-6. These pins are paired 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. They are connected on the power supply via a trace on the bottom of the board. You can put the wires in either side of the pair without a problem.
