hey, i'm new here, been lurking for a while, first post. i just had a moon patrol delivered. plugged it in, played for a little bit and it reset. it was very quick. it's been happening everytime i play. i've only gotten one full game to play. it seems like every time i hit a rock with a bullet the screen goes a little wacky (from the bass). is there anything in particular i should be looking for? thanks in advance.

welcome to the madness...
get a multimeter and check your +5 volts. could be a little low and causing reset.
could be the connector to the game board PCB has a pin in there thats a bit weak not allowing proper electron flow. test both sides of the connector. that will tell you what your +5 volts is after the connector and before the connector. you have a 3 prong plug right?

Most common problem with a Moon Patrol resetting is cap failure on the power supply. Rebuild the power supply and you should be fine.

Bass notes cause extra current draw from the power supply. If the regulation is off because of poor caps then you could have problems like resets.

more dumb questions...

ok so i downloaded the drawings, matched them up to the power supply. there seems to be 16 capacitors on the board. do they all need to be replaced? can they be purchased at say a home depot or radio shack?
also...i've never soldered...really....how hard is it? i was planning on buy a blank board and some resistors to practice on.

BTW - there is a molex connector from the heat sink to the power supply. I often see heat damage there, and it causes problems with a stable +5 that can cause resetting....

moon patrol: the saga continues...(modessitt)

it is EXACTLY that molex connector...so....do i need this?

and...how exactly does that connector get terminated? is there a resource online that shows how to do it?
also, is that a symptom of a larger problem?
thanks!

That is half of what you need. You also need the .156 header too.

The burnt Molex is only part of your problem. I can almost guarantee it.

moon patrol part 2

next stupid question. i just recently got a make trax cocktail. can i pull the power supply from the make trax cocktail and use it in my moon patrol?

Sure, but you still need to replace that connector...

Don't need to change any of the connectors. The connector from the transformer is keyed correctly and just hangs over the header a couple of pins.

I currently use this setup on my test rig, because it allows me to plug in and test either type of Williams power supply.

I meant the burnt molex he already had. if he still uses that connector, then it still needs to be replaced...
