acquired a moon patrol a while ago, was 8 months coming then went into storage without being touched.

finally pulled this one out of storage. opened it up to check it out before plugging in. and discovered one coin tube was loose and lots of coins in the floor of the cab.

cleaned up the obvious loose bits and coins, found a spare NOS joystick (completed), gave it a quick checkover and thought what the heck lets turn it on and see what happens!

voila! moon patrol is alive! only two issues, a slightly dim display and the monitor flickers when the explosion sound occurs

so, a cleanup needed and a little technical attention. then, check out the spare boardset and finally i will install the Souza MP HSS mod!

well that was my sunday - good fun!

Mine is currently completely stripped and lying out on the sidewalk after the (hopefully) last sanding episode before primer...

i am still pondering whether to preserve the existing (cracked up as per usual) artwork or re-stencil. is suspect i will be pondering this for some time as i have some other restencilling to do first!!

I will be posting my resto adventure once the stenciling and everything is done. That might help you decide. Since mine had a big hole cut in the front, it was an easy decision for me.

I got the last of the bondo done today, and put a couple coats of primer on the front. Need to do some fine sanding and some minor spackling fixes, then a couple more coats to get it really smooth, then I'll start on the primer for the sides...

Stencil it. I'll give you some step by step inspiration:

Nice, Shawn. Hope mine comes out as nice.

Questions:

1) Did you use the paint codes on Prok's site?

2) All layers done with oil-base?

3) I've seen some mention of the problem of putting the yellow down over the blue, and to primer that layer again before doing the yellow. Is that necessary, or do i get the paint-and-primer-mixed paint?

4) I've seen with latex that you should pull the stencil when it's tacky, but with oil you can let it dry completely before pulling. I plan to use oil, and I don't want a repeat of what happened to your Joust...

NO

YES

I DID A LIGHT COAT OF PRIMER FIRST FOR BOTH COLORS.

MY JOUST WAS ALL OIL-BASED PAINT. I WAITED 48 HOURS AND IT STILL PULLED UP.

Moon patrol has each color on a separate layer so you should be fine. Joust came all colors on one sheet and I didn't like that method at all.

NO

Perchance, do you still have the paint codes you used?

Well, you're just full of good news. I guess I have to ask - do you normally wait until it dries and get good results, and that was an aberration due to the weird way the stencil worked, or was it because you waited longer (or shorter) than you normally do?

With the one color per sheet method, I always pull the stencil no more than 10 minutes after spraying the final coat of that one color. With the 'all one sheet' method, the first color sat for 96 hours, the second 72 and the 3rd sat for 48 hours before I could pull the all in one stencil. Every color tore. You also have to mask each color you just sprayed days AFTER you've already removed the windows and sprayed that color. With 3 colors, you have to do it twice. Uncover, spray, recover. Uncover, spray, recover. When some of the colors' borders are within an 1/8 of an inch of eachother, it can be a real pain to try and recover the first 2 colors without accidentally getting an edge or corner of your makeshift mask into the 3rd color's windows. This happened to me as well. Read my MP resto thread for more details about colors and methods I used.

As I've not done a stencil yet, I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean here, but it may become obvious as I get to doing it. I'll look for that thread when I get everything primed and sanded and am ready for paint...
