Moon Patrol and Lunar Lander in a small collection

wondered what peoples thoughts were in a collection of say 8 games?
thanks

For me, Moon Patrol would make it in a collection of 20. LL would make it in a collection of 50.

As always, it depends on how much you like Moon Patrol and Lunar Lander. I have a 20 game collection and they haven't made the cut.

Of course, my Big Run wouldn't make most people's 20 game collections, so there you are.

Fair point. I've had a Lunar Lander for 32 years.... And it's one that will never leave my collection.

Moon Patrol isn't even on my radar, though. So get the games YOU want to play.

ive played them both around 50 games. beat moon patrol. i think i like lunar lander better. but enjoy them both.

Same here. It's all subjective though. All that matters is how you personally would rank them and whether or not there are eight other games you'd rather have more.

I have 27 working uprights and one of them is Moon Patrol. But I really like Moon Patrol and it would probably make the cut if I went down to 15 cabs. After that it gets real tough.

I appreciate Lunar Lander but I'm not sure I'd ever choose to own one. In a group of 50 it would survive until I obtained a better #50.

I've got a Moon Patrol project in my collection. If anything I'm having a challenge finding parts for the damn thing. Was lucky enough to finally converted cab with minty side art, now I'm stuck not being able to source a few bits I need to finish it.

I don't think Moon Patrol makes the cut unless it's a game you really love. I personally don't see anything special about it. Lunar Lander is a different story though, but it all depends on what sort of collection you have/want. LL has a number of things going for it: it is a vector game; due to its controls it is not a game that can be replicated satisfactorily on a typical multi/mame setup; and it is fairly rare and therefore highly desired as a collectible/investment type of game (not that MP is not collectible, but not to the extent that LL is). Plus it is a fun and challenging game to boot, although it's not everyone's cup of tea.

So if you're looking for a showy collection of rarities that will impress other collectors, I would say LL might have a spot. I like the game and I like vector games, so if I had a LL it would be one of the last to leave my collection. But on the other hand, if you're looking more for games you like rather than games that look good in a collection, there may be others you like a lot more and cost you a lot less.

I'm your bizarro world counterpart, lol. I get bored with Lunar Lander in about 10 minutes, but love how Moon Patrol keeps throwing new stuff at you for a long time. Most people that play never make it past the mines to see how the game throws new stuff at the player after the first course.

If I wanted a space physics type game, it'd be Gravitar since it does the Lunar Lander thing with so much more fun.

If you collect vector games, then likely LL is in the collection. Debatable, with so many awesome BW and Color XY games, if LL is in the top 10. YMMV

If you collect classic Williams games, then I would guess MP is in the top 10. YMMV

If you collect random games, then I doubt either is in your "top 10 (or 8)" collection if you didn't have a history with either BITD. YMMV

Yup. Like a lot of games from the golden era, Moon Patrol seems like just another good but not great game, until you get better than the average player. When you're able to complete the Championship Course, that's when Moon Patrol gets really fun.

This, and I don't really care for Gravitar. But if I have to choose between Lunar Lander or Gravitar it would be Gravitar in a heartbeat.

Wild guess, but since you have 7 games in your sig, I'm thinking you have enough room for exactly 1 more game and you have deals for both of those games for the taking. If so, give us the rest of the details (condition, price, shipping/travel, etc.) and we can give some more informed advice.

I have moon patrol and like it but if I had to cut to ten it would not make it . I would love to have LL and it would outlast MP on the chop block but I don't think I'll ever pay what LL seems to be going for these days ( I've only seen $1500-$4000 ) .

MP plays just fine on a MAME cab, but LL with the analog thrust and deep bass sound . . . that's a keeper. In a collection of 8 games, they all need to have unique controls or display. If one of your 8 is a MAME with the typical 2 sticks, 6 buttons each, and trackball; that frees up a lot of options for the other 7.

Actually I don't have any deals and the works for either of the machines. but I have been playing both of them a lot at Funspot. and currently I don't have anything that even remotely resembles that era and style.
thanks Blake

I knew Moon Patrol was between 800 and $1,000 but I didn't have any idea how expensive lunar lander was. that is a pretty penny.

LL is planned in my short list collection of 8 until we move. MP would be in the 20+. It's the unique controls that make LL more important, and a lot of fun to play.

I plan to find a beat down Asteroids and convert it to LL.

This is kind of how I look at these decisions. The vector games and games with weird controls are the ones that really appeal to me to own. LL falls into that category (though it wouldn't be in my top 10).

To be fair the high end of that range is what I've seen asked for it - not sales prices I have seen . I see it listed high but not sure Ive ever seen an actual sales price - saw the list price and wrote it off .
