Mame haters skip this thread.

Stumbled across a game called Horizon, made by Irem in '85 that has got to be a successor to Moon Patrol. Anyone heard of it?

I'm a-liking it.

Some screenees:

Actually I really like it. I've only played about the first 2.5 - 3 levels but so far its been great! Can't really rate it until I play it more but I can see this getting played alot.

You know how when you first play a game and you get this instant "like" or "comfort" for it? You just kinda connect with it? Thats what I feel with this.

I cant really say its harder or easier than MP either. A challenge, yes, but it's new. Whats cool so far is the depth. Literally. Those 3 "roads" or "lanes" you see on the first 2 snaps are negotiable with your vehicle. You just pull back (down) or push forward (up) on the joy to hop towards you or away in to the hills. The enemies above seem to follow above so you can hit them :) What gets fun are dudes on the ground that come in quick. You can avoid them and they will go off the screen to the left making you think they are gone only to reappear behind you a random number of seconds later to whoop up on your ass. It's great!

I recommend it so far. Maybe there is a game killer later on. Hope not!

Thanks for the heads-up on this. Moon Patrol is a top 5 game for me, so I don't know how I've missed this all these years. I fired up the MAME cab, and there was Horizon in the game list. I haven't updated my ROM's in years, so its been sitting there all along.

Only had a chance to play a few times and its pretty cool. Immediately recognizable as Moon Patrol style play. Not sure I like the depth as replacement for the jumping, but I guess they had to do something different!

yah. thanks for pointing it out. just downloaded it and tried a couple games.
play is a bit awkward but it looks like a new challenge.
love moon patrol but it has become rather predictable.

It is interesting because Moon Patrol ran on Irem's M52 hardware and Horizon ran on Irem's M62 hardware.

Horizon almost seems like the intermediate game between Moon Patrol and Irem's R-Type (M72 hardware). The ship in Horizon actually looks like a cross between the Moon Patrol rover and the R-9a Arrowhead.

Wow, how cool is that? I love hearing about these lost transitional games. It kinda does look like a cross between those ships. But the video you posted is interesting too, because it's the third stage with the huge boss ship. IMO, the boss ship looks somewhat like a larger version of the player's ship in Horizon.

Really? You are going to say that R-Type looks like Gradius? Street Fighter totally looks like Double Dragon too. Oh and Sonic looks just like Mario.

I know what you mean. I've been dicking around with mame since v.36 and JUST saw this...

A lot on here dislike mame but if it wasn't for it, I would've never got to play some of the amazing games from back then.

ha ha, you are killin me smalls. (in mario voice)
conceptually, they had to have been thinking gradius when they made that game?...or not.

but now I have 2 new games to play with on Mame. good stuff.

Now that MAME is all setup in a dedicated cabinet and it's own old laptop as the brain.... man i LOVE it.
i couldn't picture going back now.

This thread must be bumped, anyone have this game? It would be awesome to have Moon Patrol, Horizon, and R-Type, R-Type 2 in a row.

moon patrol

this looks cool, any youtube video on this? moon patrol is awesome, especially the music.
another cool "moon" game is crater raider, you don't see those very often.
