Years ago , when i first got into these games , i was switching a monitor in my cocktail from north south to east west , to go from Galaga to , MoonPatrol , game had not been powered up for about 4 days ..

I had to remove the HV cable off the monitor to twist it around , so i grabbed the rubber boot , removed the 2 hook wires inside ,,,,,, BBBBB BANG !! got a filling rattler of a shock , nasty stuff , i now know to discharge Cap loads like this , i spoke to my tech guy on the phone , he had a good laugh , and explained the cap power storage thing a bit ,

Moral is i spose , any new guys out there reading this , get some advise , i use a screw driver , insulated handle , i wrap a copper wire around the shaft , and hook it to the monitor braid earth , then discharge the damn thing , even twice ,,

I had a monitor sit on the floor for 2 months, then still have a spark at the anode hole...

It's amazing how well those things will hold a charge. I usually do the initial discharge as I pop the anode cap off, discharge before I physically pull the chassis off the frame and discharge before I put the anode cap back on. It's not uncommon for me to get some spark on all three of those stages.

Pop the anode cap off , you might have to educate me , is that the rubber boot ? , im not tech savvy [ that`s why i copped it !! ]

Yes, the "suction cup" is where the HV from the flyback connects to a hole in the tube. That hole is the anode for the CRT. (Also called the "ultor" IIRC).

The flat grey patches outside the tube with the braid strapped across is the cathode or "dag". Dag is short for aquadag, which is the name for the coating itself.

Thanks , interesting , i had to google CRT , not everybody with games etc , really knows whats inside , i like to know , but you can only remember what is relevant at the time . Time of say me doing a repair of something etc .

That is all right from what I remember from tech school. I can sometimes still use the TV info I learned, unlike the VCR stuff.
