hey...new guy here..quick question.
i've lurked around and sometimes see threads about monitors...
people need monitors? what kind?

the reason i ask is because i live in a college town and whenever leases are up or people are moving...they just put their old CRT monitors at the "donation station" of the apartments.

usually if you drive around..there are tons of them.
i'm sure as people are upgrading there will be less and less crt's...

is THIS the type of monitor you're all looking for...or do you all mean like the original monitors from the original video games? or are they interchangeable??

soo yeah....dumb question? not sure...just curious.

Nope - different monitors. When people here talk about monitors, they're referring to arcade machine monitors. Monitors intended for personal computers are completely different in many respects (resolution, physical size, sync frequency, etc).

Actually, what becomes pretty useful to us video game guys isn't old computer monitors - it's old television sets. Monitors for games in the 80's used the same type of picture tubes used in televisions. I pretty routinely scavenge old 19" television sets for the picture tube, to swap into an arcade monitor with a faulty or broken picture tube.

Not all computer monitors are useless for arcade purposes though. Very old RGB monitors intended for Apple IIgs, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, and similar computer systems make great test bench monitors, as they DO use the same video signal that arcade machines do.

Ian...thanks for the reply and info!

good info...see...i'm learning!

p.s. what's "old" for a smaller 19" tv?
and do people on here trade them? buy/sell them?
how much?

thanks again!
