today i was checking golden tee game i just got. and when i powered it up everthing was normal. the screen seemed kinda dark but before i could adj something bad happened. after about 3min a loud buzzing noise happened and the picture went out. when i checked the source of the noise it was coming from the flyback transformer and a blue arc was seen going across the transformer. it smells like its burning i unplugged and tried again no luck just makes that noise everytime. is this just a flyback issue or monitor? what needs to be done to diag or repair?

Welcome. Do you know what kind of monitor it is? Or have a pic. Definately sounds like you toasted the flyback and along with that the HOT and power Reg can go as well. Let us know the type of monitor and we'll be able to help more.

stop powering it up!!!!!!!!!

rerplace the fly and retest.. if your lucky, thats all it needs. if you keep powering it up you will smoke alot more components..

its a zenith tube 25" model g-a63adg25x heres a pic of the setup. thanks shan

That's a K7000... flyback problems are very common on them, and it's easy to find a replacement. I'd get the WG K7000 Flyback Repair Kit from Bob Roberts for $26, that way if you took out the HOT and/or the fuse, you'll have one, as well as the cap kit, which you should probably install while you have the chassis pulled. You should tell him it's for a 25" though, since the fuse should be the 2A, not the 1.5A.

Is taping it a good idea? When I had a flyback arc on me I immediately turned off the monitor and didn't fire it back up until I had a new flyback.

What about putting electrical tape over the flyback where the sparks are comming out?

That won't work. If you can epoxy the hole, that might work, but tape won't...

Neither epoxy nor electrical tape will do it (25kV will go through both)... you can use silicone caulk, but on something easily replacable like a K7000 flyback... just replace it.

I've used silicon in the past on hard to replace flybacks, but as DogP said, just pop a new one in.

dont hack it just replace it..

your going to create a much larger and much more EXPENSIVE headache if you do that krap..

just replace the damn thing!

update on monitor issue

i finally got around to replacing the flyback and did the caps. the monitor works now but the screen color is off like before it seems to only have shades of green and blue and there is blue lines going across screen spaced about 1 1/2 all the way up? no adjustment will correct what the hell is that? game is golden tee 2k

Um, Which game? I missed out on what's going on here.

I assume you've tried turning down the blue pots on the neckboard? Can you get rid of the lines by turning down the screen control on the flyback? It sounds like you're missing red, which of course I'd first check by trying a different board to make sure it's not the board, try to adjust the red pots on the neckboard, and check the wiring, red drive transistors, etc.
