Monitor looks like its going to turn off and then comes back?

Hi all,

So I got a 27" med Res sharper image i believe it is in a Sanfrancisco rush that is having some issues. It looks fine but then will occasionally click and the image will start to compress like its going to turn off and then comes back quickly. Is this maybe the power supply of the machine or something to do with the monitor? Gameplay does not appear to ever be affected so I'm assuming thats not it. Any info/help would be much appreciated. I've got to be fairly good with everything else on these machine BUT the monitors ;)

Thanks!!!

Jim

Sorry for being monitor ignorant but what is OVP and b+?

O. ver
V. oltage
P. rotection

Or more commonly known as high voltage shutdown

How to adjust or check your b+? You have to know what monitor you're working on. They are all different.

OVP - Over Voltage Protection - there's a circuit in the monitor that checks to see if the HV is too high - and if so, shuts down the monitor to prevent damage.

B+ - the main voltage rail in the monitor, and the output from the low voltage power supply. If it's too high, it'll trigger the over voltage protection circuit, or if it's low, it'll cause all sorts of other weirdness.

Although, your problem may be HV arcing. Is it a sharp snap or pop you're hearing, or is it a soft click like from a relay? If it's an arc, that will cause the image to momentarily jump and shrink. One cause of arcing is crud on the back of the picture tube around the anod cap. Discharge the monitor, remove the anode connector, and clean the area around the anode hole with windex on a paper towel, as well as the underside of the suction cup. Reassemble when dry and try again.

I would guess a cold solder joint somewhere, bad flyback, or poor pin connection at the neckboard. Maybe even a loose (or broken pins inside the) anode cup...

Thanks for all the help so far all!! I've been scared ( Yes I'm man enough to admit it! haha ) of messing with the monitors up till now so really need as much help as I can get ;)

Is any of the possible causes so far something that is going to cause more problems or blow out the monitor completely or anything if I continue to run it as is? I've been trying not to use it but want to go check if its a pop or soft click as Retro was asking.

I'm hoping to not have to do it but it I might have to take it in to a shop if its not going to be something simple. I would love to try and get someone out to look at it so I could learn some stuff but don't know of anyone local. Let me know if someone knows anyone in Dallas ( just north of dallas specifically) that works on monitors and might be willing to take a look. Maybe I'll try and PM a few local KLOVers and ask.

Thanks again!!!

Jim

There are quite a few people in the Dallas area who can help, but the only full-time arcade repair guy I know of (there be many others but I think they have day jobs, too) is former member TexasHotShot, aka Scott with http://www.hyperspacearcade.com/ . He's in Denton...

Is the click loud or kinda soft? If its loud it could be high voltage leaking from the flyback. Does it happen often enough when you power the game up or just every once in a while? Try taking the back door off, turn the lights off in the room (or just make the room as dark as you can) and watch the area around the flyback. If you see a small bolt of electricity coming off of it then you have a leak. If its happening on the bottom of the board (where the flyback is soldered to the board) then it could be cold solder.

If its a leak I've had great luck using Silicone glue to fill the crack. You just have to give it time to cure (dont power the game up for about 24 hours). If its cold solder then it just needs to be touched up.

Unless some one swapped the monitor out that game should have a Neo-Tec or a Wells in it. Any chance you can snap a few pics of the back of the mointor and post them here?

I'm in town for the rest of the week and actually work in Frisco (most of the time). I can stop by during the day if your around if you want a second opinion.

Another option would be to bring the game by my place of work...

LMK what works for you.

Matt
