So I just got a hatris cocktail and its got several monitor troubles, I've got a few monitor chassis from random tubes I can use for parts if need be. Firstly the monitor makes a hissing noise all the time(First time I plugged it in I thought it might blow up haha).
Secondly the screen is blurry and last is the screen is a tiny bit wavy(Probably a cap kit should fix it).
I'll get some pics up in a bit.
Thanks guys

Have you looked at the chassis? Shut it off and inspect to make sure that:

1) the anode cup is in securely
2) the flyback isn't arcing
3) the focus has been adjusted

I was messing a bit with the focus before I bought it, didn't seem to do much, I'll take another look. Noob question - Wheres the flyback? I don't have too much monitor experience(Just enough to discharge etc)

you'll see a suction cup attached to your tube. That is the anode cup. it can give you a good shock there, even with the power off. Follow the wire attached to it and you'll find the flyback...

I know what the anode cup is, I'm not that stupid...I'd say I'm fairly experienced for only owning an arcade cab for a week. I see no arching on the flyback and the hissing seems to have stopped after leaving it on a bit. The anode might need to be cleaning or have dust around it I think.

He was telling you how to find the flyback, in other words he answered your question.

As for the hissing on start up fading away after being on, it does sound like a cleanliness issue...

It was the way he said it. Anyways I'll get this discharged and see what I can go from there. A heatsink should work fine for this correct?(Last time I used the grounded metal frame, this cocktail obviously doesnt have one.)

You should ground it to whatever the monitor is normally grounded to. If the heatsink is grounded to the same ground as the monitor than it will be fine.

I would assume the heatsink is grounded, its on the monitor chassis

I'm sorry if I was sounding condescending, but when you said:

I wasn't sure you knew enough to know everything you need to know. Just because you knew to discharge it there, doesn't mean you know that's called the anode cap, and I'd rather overexplain in one post, rather than have 3 subsequent posts explaining what the terms meant.

If I had wanted to be a dick, I would have said, "If you were adjusting the focus, then you already know where the flyback is..."
:)

Good point :p anywho, is the heatsink on the chassis grounded? I don't really see anywhere else I could ground to.

It would help to know the chassis model type. Otherwise, look for a grounding strap to the monitor somewhere, and use that...

That is an Orion 2012/2022 chassis. Here's another pic of it:

Unfortunately, I don't know where an online schematic or manual is to be found for that model, nor do I know if flybacks are available should you need one.

I would check the flyback wire to your neck socket to make sure it is attached properly, and that the focus pin is okay on your neck.

As for grounding for discharging, there is a wire coming from the tube and attaching to your neckboard. Use that as the ground...

I cant seem to be able to get to that wire, what else can I use for ground? I do have 3 other chassis, I could use those if I really needed to right?

Your chassis has to match the yoke on the tube. You can't put in a different chassis unless you have a matching yoke for the tube.

It looks like the base of the chassis is on a metal plate or frame? Use that as a ground...

The monitor discharged fine using the frame the chasis was on, I put heavy unit in the cab and it works, still blurry no matter how much I adjust the focus. There is no arching.

Check that focus pin and the wire that goes to in the neck socket from flyback.

And in case you don't know which is the focus pin, it's the one by itself, usually in a small triangular piece of plastic...

BTW - you may get some better results by turning down the brightness or contrast a little, or pulling the glass off the top and cleaning the monitor tube...

Not quite sure what your asking me to do, and theres no triangular piece of plasic I can see. Theres a pot with a white triangle on the pcb?
