My mame machine took a shit today. Fired it up and no picture wierd was working fine shut power off and for a split second and windows desktop is visible then gone. SO I tried turning the brightness up and sure enough I got a pic only problem is now I have to turn the brightness all the way up or I dont have a picture. Wierd thing is occasionally it will get really bright when switching games then immediatley go dark and dull. Any ideads fellows this is a wells gardner 25 from a simpsons machine.

When was the last time it was capped? It sosunds like either the brightness level or the black level has failed. Most likely a cap but it could be either of those pots as well. One of those pots is internal to the flyback btw, has it been replaced?

nope Im pretty green havent capped any of my monitors yet. I get a pic but brightness has to be all the way up or no picture. How can I tell if its been replaced?

Does it have white controls or black? If I remember correctly the original flybacks had white pots. They are prone to failure. Bob Roberts carries replacements.

Im using the brightness and contrast controls on the remote board.

There are additional controls on the monitor chassis. Try turning the controls on the flyback (the large black object with a red wire coming out of the top of it and going to the picture tube.

I have finally adjusted the controls on the flyback one was focus the other screen. The brightness adjustment had glue on it for some reason. Anyways I could make the picture brighter but could not lower the contrast at all without losing the image contrast is cranked all the way up adjusting birghtness on the remote board does nothing barely. I dont understand why it seems bright on some screens mame menu for example but washes out the second somthing with color hits it. By upping the conrols on the flyback made the game look better but once returning to windows the screen was way to bright causing blooming.I have also noticed the monitor has a slight whine when turned on.

The facts: It was working perfectly fine and now crap for picture.
No amount of adjustment is going to fix your problem.
Check the focus wire on the flyback to ensure that's nice and solid. Other than that a cap kit and possibly a flyback are in order. I would personally do both.
