I have two monitors(BOTH 7400's) and neither one will degauss properly(if at all). I know they have it built in, so you get a clear picture pretty much all the time. But... it doesn't seem to matter as it doesn't work to clear anything off.

I hooked 110 up to the degaussing cable around the 7400(I used a press switch so I could let off quickly instead of just jolting the crap out of it). all I end up with are red green and blue rings center out. so I know the cable works, it has to be in the chassis' board right? if so... please oh wonderful monitor master... help me out :D

I've got this problem on mine too. Having the degauss cable connected does cause some waviness on the screen, but it does not actually degauss it.

The degauss coil around the tube is meant to degauss the tube all right, but it won't fix major problems right away.

  • Sometimes it can take 2-3 weeks of turning on and off to get it perfect.
  • Sometimes the tube has been near an unprotected magnetic source for a long period and will no longer degauss
  • Sometimes the frame gets magnetized (like if you drill a hole through it for an odd mounting setup) and that affects the image and the normal degauss wires can't counteract it.
  • Sometimes the yoke shifts forward or back and the wrong position is mistakenly assumed to be a degauss problem.

I wouldn't try running 110 directly through the coil around the tube with it mounted to the tube.

You should pick up a manual degausser, and try it that way. Works much better...

i have one, but it didn't seem to help. i looked online for the best way to use it, and it moved the colors around, but never really got them back normal. I tried hooking up a good 7500 chassis to the tube, and it degaussed perfectly fine. wonder what it could be. oh well. thanks for the tips. I'll be careful when mounting monitors in odd places when I drill as I'm sure it was the original cause. TY!!!

Okay, when you put the 7500 on, did you swap the yoke? I've seen bad "degauss" issues on a 7501 yoke when used with a 7502 chassis, and since they use different yokes, that doesn't surprise me. And since the 7400 uses a completely different yoke than a 7500, if you didn't swap the yokes, then your issue MAY be yoke incompatibility...

How about when the degauss coil is supplied with a constant voltage as in my case? It does not receive a voltage burst when the chassis is first switched on.

I did test it and it wasn't, but that was admittedly in circuit. If I did remove it and find it to be faulty, is it possible to run the chassis until I got a replacement?

You can unplug the degaussing connector and run it that way. Degauss it manually if you need to. If it still looks wavy with it disconnected, you may have another issue...
