Perusing through Facebook Marketplace about 6 months ago I came across an Altered Beast in a Gravitar cabinet. After watching it for a month the gentleman was doing a roadtrip past my town so we struck a deal. About a week ago I dug this out of storage to do a moderate refresh to the cab.
Plans for this cabinet were to turn it into a Major Havoc. But it will take take to amass those parts, so in the meantime I'm going to return this back into a Gravitar. I've never played the game, and it doesn't have the best reputation so if it sucks it'll stay running as a Gravitar until all the MH parts arrive. And two, I get to experiment with cosmetic repair of the original side art rather than tearing it off and going the repro route.
I love the look of a freshly restored minty cab, and have done a few over the last three years. But as time has progressed I'm appreciating the patina more and more. This cab for most part is swell free, except for the back of the cabinet on one side, and a bit on the speaker panel. There are some decent chips, size and quantity, along the edge of the cab, which I'm going to attempt to fill, then mask over the artwork and respray the white. New laminate will go on the coin door panel as it has a couple chunks missing on the bottom. And laminate will also be applied to the speaker panel once the swell is sanded down.
Control panel ready for paint after having 18 holes welded over….crazy!
