MMAO over PM - Can we just ban this activity here please?

We all know Make Me An Offer over PM, is just a seller trying to run a blind auction in a KLOV listing.

Can we please stamp this shit out here, it doesn't serve the community any benefit. People who frequent these forums are usually knowledgeable enough to know what value a particular item has. Keeping an ongoing archive of sales data helps the community better understand the trends in values as they rise and fall over the years.

If people want blind auctions there's already a pretty well known web site for that kind of skulduggery.

Discuss (nicely)

EDITED: To clarify the abuse of MMAO with offers ONLY accepted over PMs and prices/bidding not publicly viewable/searchable.

I disagree. I see plenty of threads where a person has an item where it seems pretty clear they just want to get rid of it, aren't looking to make a ton of money off of selling it, and are content to allow the buyer to set the value he/she thinks it's worth.

I do find distasteful the MMAO threads that are obviously auctions, usually for some rare part or game and there's rules for 'bidding' and whatnot and the seller either waits for the offers to go past his selling price or he picks the highest offer after a certain amount of time. That is not a "make me an offer" thread but is actually a "let people fight to inflate my profit" thread, and that's what ebay is for. But I don't think those should be confused with a regular MMAO thread, which to me is just a seller saying "here's this item, first one to make me a fair offer and it's yours."

This is a good distinction, thanks for pointing this out.

The problem is having to separate one from the other which would add extra work for the mods. While I understand the use of MMAO just to unload something for a fair price, I don't think those sellers would be inconvenienced to put some kind of price with an 'or best' offer option instead.

Thoughts?

I MUCH prefer to see "$Asking or best offer". At least that way I know what you think the item is worth to you, and can save my time and energy if that's way more than it's worth to me. And on that note....my "best offer" should be just that...best and final. Not a lowball, with the intent to negotiate to something in the middle. But that's just how I operate.

^ this.

and +1 vote to banish MMAO from these forums forever. thanks griffin!

MMAO with public (non-PM) auctions are great. People love it when I do it and they often get great deals. Why do you care, OP? You guys all need to take a look at your unjustified criticism. Are you afraid you are going to miss out on something for sale? Are you afraid to post what you are willing to pay? What is the exact reason you don't like MMAO?

I understand the distastefulness of a KLOV auction under cover of PM's, but I don't do that. My auctions offer full transparency and many people really enjoy them. If you don't like MMAO, don't click the threads labelled as such.

I'll never understand the mindset of those of you who want to boss others around in a public forum. If you don't like it, move along.

Okay, so if we ban that, are you guys going to put up with a shitload of "I have this, not sure what it's worth, but I want to sell it, so what price range should I ask for?" threads? Or are you going to bitch about that, too? :p

You just don't like the public auction because you are too cheap to throw out you final offer. Why does the seller always have to set the price? The beauty of the public KLOV auction is that speed and courage is rewarded.

Bringing up discussion of a subject to see if a change would benefit the community overall is not bossing others around.

Public auctions are different.... A MMAO, doesn't mean the item will sell at all if the poster doesn't get their price in the end. It just means make me an offer...they don't have to accept it, or ANY of them, where an auction will sell at the highest/last price.

I've seen this happen many times, and even just this week.

thats the main issue with MMAO, it's the private PM's that the rest of us are not aware of.

if MMAO's were all public inside the threads (like EBAY), then i think it would be more fair.

These questions are often stealth auctions under the cover of PMs. When I don't know what something is worth, I let the buyers decide... via transparent KLOV auction. And that is exactly what these guys are whining about.. they are losing the opportunity to steal items in secret.

I suggest you reassess this statement. Banning an activity is bossing people around. You still haven't even explained what you don't like about it. "Stamping the shit out of something" sure as hell is bossy... especially when your only reason is that you don't like it.
