I picked up a Mortal Kombat 3 today, it is in a midway universal cabinet and looks to have been converted from something else. When I turn the game on, all I hear is static, and it doesnt fire up. When I was troubleshooting, I put both of my working mk2 boards in and neither one would show on the monitor, but if I put in a regular jamma board such as tmnt, if comes right up. Anyone know why this is? Am I missing something here? Thanks for your help!!!!

if it's got a Peter Chou power supply in it, that in itself could name it the culprit. I'm going to guess it's a voltage thing, TMNT being a Japanese piece of architecture that I'm going to assume doesn't even need -5V probably squirreled its way to working while the MKs wouldn't.

I know -5V is for the sound only, you could probably bring the power supply back if you have a small lamp fixture like I keep to put a load on it and get the voltage back to a safe spot before plugging another board back in after vigorously wiping the adjustment pot.

definitely check all your JAMMA power wiring, make sure nothing's wrong. if you want take pics.

he has -5 this is the cabinet he got

i saw his other thread. (and well it's a midway cab he should have -5)

i'm more thinking it's low 5v at the chips

btw does the midway warranty sticker say "Universal Cabinet"? or does it say MK1/NBA Jam? it looks like mk1 but universal cabs and nba jam also came in that one so i've learned. I'm guessing mk1 tho from the control panel w/ red sticks

that's awesome i wonder what's under the paint

you've never seen one of those? it's got that blue and yellow pattern thing with the pink waves.

this is the Williams variant, much like a Super High Impact cab, but the bottom part on the sides is the same. it was called Omniflex.

our MK1 back in the day was in one of those Universals, it had the pattern at the bottom and kit MK1 sideart. I can't remember if the CP said Midway on the front or not though, I've seen so many of these dedicated machines and such since '95 that I don't remember lol

there should be a little light on that power supply, turn the knob with the game on till the light turns green. Yellow=too low Red=too high Green=ok. If it never turns green get a new supply. If it has no light on it you might need to get a voltage tester. It's got to be the voltage, MK's are the worst with voltage they have to be spot on or you will have loads of issues. Hope this helps

always use a meter. don't rely on light indicators heh. the most ideal way to check voltage is between the power supply and JAMMA edge (to get an idea of how much resistance is there) and then to check between the JAMMA edge and board components like a rom to see what that power difference is. the latter shouldn't be much, if it's a noticeable drop then you do what Broods and I suggest to the entire planet and pull the JAMMA board out and clean both sides of the edge connector with a pencil eraser.

I just serviced a Carnevil, Cruis'n Exotica and Road Burners the same way over the weekend, the results were amazing. the Road Burners (Vegas) has a .03 difference between the JAMMA edge and rom/hard disk power connector since I cleaned it.

I made this thread specifically for doing those power tests: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=215552

awesome!!!!

Alrighty, swapped out the power supply (the existing one would not change from red) and the mk2 board fired right up. Thanks guys! Now onto the next issue: getting the mk3 board working....

I'd still check the voltage at the chips and adjust accordingly. but glad you got it running :D

Okay, new question, currently, the mk3 board is dead. I want to use my MK2 board in this cab for the time being. I get video just fine, but what do I need to do to get audio? I have a tested working soundboard, but I know mk3 is wired up to pull sound directly from the main board, so what needs to be done to get audio? Thanks!

you need the ribbon cable, and power wires connecting the soundboard to the main and that should be it.

I've got the ribbon cable, but which power cables are you talking about?

Edit: I think I see the cable in my mk2 manual.....however I am not currently in possession of said power cable...hmmm

bob roberts has them :D i've contemplated making them myself.

He actually has the completed harness or he has the stuff to make one? I'd say if not, he may be able to make one for me, he made a monitor adapter cable for me a while back, no sweat...maybe I should shoot him an email....
