What would make a NBA Jam model sound board crackle and pop. It does not do it continuously but on and off at different times. Is a certain part failing that I should take a look at?

Thanks

It also seems to be resetting itself every once in a while. It might pop a little or make a static sound and then bong again like it is booting. Also can anyone tell me what the U3 rom is for on this board. It is a socketed rom, the UV window type. I removed it just to see what would happen and when powered up all I get is a loud constant static noise.

Thanks for any help.

I am thinking the ROMs might be bad or possibly just the U3 ROM. Mine also "bongs" seven times and I don't know what that error code means. The sound diagnostics screen says IRQ is good. I don't have any others to swap with them to test this theory and I don't want to buy another set in case that is not the problem. Do you have another board like this or spare ROMs you could swap to see.

I have this exact same issue. I wish someone posted some answers :)

U3 i think is just the main program rom for the sound board (i don't remember what the rom check screen looks like right now). what does the board look like (any burn/scratches, no dead/dieing caps)? it could be shorting out somewhere that would cause the pop (turn the lights out and look at it in the dark when it does it do you see a light show?).

only one of these boards i have issues with is my spare nba jam te sound board (i have both TE and regular JAM), and i believe the reason is a mangled u3 rom but i haven't really looked into it that much yet.

ah yea we discussed this once, mine does the same 7 bongs (the spare with the bad u3 chip). i need to get around to actually ordering a replacement from hobbyroms and checking the outcome.

If you do let me know how it turns out. I really need all new ROMs anyway because the ones I have are for TE and my mainboard is plain NBA Jam. Like I said, I would hate to buy them and still need a new board that I could get with the right ROMs already on there.

have you gotten anywhere with this? i just replaced my missing Y1 crystal with a shorty one (shouldn't ever be an issue again). I have yet to test it but tomorrow it's one of the first things on my list here's a pic :D

This is just a spare board as i mentioned before, and the U3 chip looks like someone stepped on it but i think it was still coming up green on the test menu if i remember correctly.

Ha! Good timing. I have not done anything yet but I just got in three non-working boards to play with. I think the xtal is there on all of them but it could be bad. If your works today, that will be my first thing to check/swap. Where did you get the xtal from. Seems like I was going to change that out at one time to try but couldn't figure out what value to get or something.

I got some regular xtals from bob roberts, but a fellow forum member was nice enough to clue me into the shorties and sent me a bunch of them. 3.58/3.57mhz is the crystal type. if one or more of your boards are missing the xtal let me know i'll send a couple your way :D

I'm going to plug in that soundboard this morning and see what it does since my repair i'll let you know in a bit.

Just an update, fixing my missing Y1 xtal fixed the repeated 7 bong issue, i now have a fully working spare sound board :D

Awesome. I was looking at the boards a little while ago and lo and behold the original board that I had that was not working and one of the three I got yesterday were missing that crystal. I took them off the other boards and put them on the boards that were missing it. The original worked right off the bat. The other board had the R89 resistor getting very hot. The cap right beside it was bad so I replaced it and that board is working now too. So I have 2 out of 4 bad boards working now. I am going to troubleshoot the other boards after I get some replacement crystals to put back on there. Thanks so much for the help. I am a happy camper :)

PM me your address i'll try and get a couple out to you in the next week or so
