Hello everyone.

So I bought MK2 last month and poped it in my machine. Its currently in a NeoGeo MVS cab but I have a JAMMA to MVS converter attached. I know Games like Killer Instinct and the MK's need a -5volt so I soldered one that connects to my power source.

Killer instinct works great, sound and all, but both of my MK1 and MK2 do a picture scroll and I dont hear any sound. Picture continuously keeps scrolling.

Am I not getting enough juice to power the boards? Or is it a dip switch setting? I am a bit lost. Has anyone else had this problem before?

Is the monitor standard res or medium res? I had an issue with War Gods, being set at medium res but on a standard res monitor.

Just a thought.

I don't know what the differences are between regular JAMMA and MVS. I'd encourage just getting another cab for your non-MVS games if it's going to be a problem. considering you got an adapter for this, it may even sound like you don't intend on running MVS? in which case I'd just replace the entire JAMMA harness.... much cheaper than another cab at least lol

that said, I've never heard of the -5V having to do with anything besides audio on any of the Midway games. if you've never heard one of those when there's no -5V present, you're missing out, lol, it's what I describe as one of the most agonizing sounds ever. it sounds like a mess of internal buzzing frequencies... coming out your speakers.

you are connecting your sound boards for both games properly right? there's the power/audio wiring harness and a ribbon cable, and in the case of MK1, a 10k ohm volume pot must be connected too.

you also tried adjusting your vertical hold too right? there's a possibility that it might be adjusted to one extreme that shows up as fine with KI and not with MKs. I had a U5000 monitor in a cab that had a janky JAMMA harness and I thought that either my game board was messed up or the sync pin pulled out when it turned out it was one of the holds was way off. then I adjusted it enough to work and it worked fine with all my games after that.

EDIT: forgot about your avatar. some SNK love... sounds like you are a Neo-Geo guy after all.

"power/audio wiring harness and a ribbon cable"
Will check, I only have the ribbon connected.

"vertical hold"
Sorry dont know what this is?

Yea I am an SNK man. The Converter works great, I've plugged in Tekken Tag and Street Fighter II Turbo with no problem. I am currently changing my control panel to a 6 button layout just to start playing these games.
I am going to rig it up to a 6 in 1 jamma switcher.

Thanks for the info, I will try to see if I have more wiring. My Mk2 came with alot of wires, got to go through it.

I will keep ya posted

Hmm not sure, not to savy with the monitor stuff yet. How can you tell?

Is this a dedicated "big red" Neo Geo cab? If so open the control panel and look for a remote adjustment board for the monitor. It should have 6 potentiometers on it and they will be labeled for their various functions You'll find the v hold adjustment on there. I had to tweak the vertical hold in my double dragon so other boards would sync up as well. It's very possible if you tweak the hold so the MK boards work that you'll be all set and hopefully not have to adjust it when switching boards. You just kinda have to find that sweet spot in the adjustment where all your boards are happy with that setting. Even if this is not a dedicated Neo cab you can still adjust the vertical hold on the monitor. It may not have a remote board so you may have to go right to the chassis. The Neo Geo system is standard resolution so it wouldn't be an issue with medium vs standard res.

Yea that did the trick, thanks alot. I have a conversion cab but its wired for a Neo setup. I have another question.

I noticed when I did the board test in the beginning I got an error from one of the chips (U67). What does this chip control? Sound?

Also noticed that I get graphic garbage on the title screen and on game play.

Here is the board, also want to know what else I need to hear the sound. still dont have sound.

What all needs to be connected for the sound board to work?
You are missing the power harness that goes between the main pcb and sound pcb as well as the volume pot. Bob Roberts has them available and I'm sure others on here would have some as well.

As for your bad ram chip from test mode, I'm not sure what that one does. It would very well be related to the glitch on the title screen. Is it a socketed chip or soldered in?

Thats right still missing things with my MK1. It just came with a ribbon and sound board. Here is a picture of the U67, (I think) Looks soldered.

Well I think I have all the right connections for my MK2, here is a pic of it plugged in. The yellow wire on my adapter is my -5volts.

When I turn it on I hear that initial "BEEP" and the led on the sound board turns on, but after a bit it turns off again. No sound, am I missing more connections? I have played the game and still no sound.

what could be wrong?

Hmm I'm not sure on the U67 error. It's definitely possible that IC is bad, but it could be caused by something else.

For your MK2 sound problem....do you have the ribbon cable connected properly? The red stripe on one side of that ribbon cable should be connected to the pin 1 side on the main pcb and sound pcb. If you look at the connectors on the board, you'll see them numbered so make sure the red stripe side of the cable is on the same and as pin 1 on both connectors.

WOW I feel dumb :( You are right the ribbon in the back was on backwards. Finally I have sound!!! Thanks alot super.

Now the MK1 can a chip like this be fixed? Dont know if I should return this board, I thought it was working 100%. I guess I have to wait until the seller responds to my pm.

Thanks for the help everyone!

jesus, I've been saying 10k the past few days.

I'm thinking of the vertical pots on my Terminator 2, sorry guys. I knew it was 50k ohm. good catch boss.

I find it a little odd that a RAM error pop up during shipping... perhaps you can negotiate a partial refund on the board or something?

Glad you have sound working now. :) I had a similar problem when I first worked with these Midway boards so you're definitely not alone.

I would agree with what Mecha said and maybe ask at least for a partial refund or see if they will exchange it for a working one or maybe even a full refund.
